Salzburg Trips of Several Days
Multi-day trips from Salzburg
Salzburg works as a base for two to three nights in the city and as a starting point for longer routes through the Salzkammergut, the Bavarian border country and the Austrian rail network. Three routes are laid out below. All fares are 2026 figures and the seasonal sights close in winter.
Route 1: Salzburg and the Lake Wolfgang area (4 days)
- Day 1: the old town. Take the funicular to Hohensalzburg Fortress, see the cathedral, walk Getreidegasse to Mozart’s Birthplace and finish at the Augustiner Bräustübl.
- Day 2: Mirabell Gardens and the DomQuartier, then bus 25 to Hellbrunn for the trick fountains (open until 1 November in 2026). Marionette Theatre in the evening.
- Day 3: bus 150 to St. Gilgen, the ferry to St. Wolfgang and the SchafbergBahn steam railway to the summit (EUR 61 return for adults in 2026, running until 1 November). Stay the night by the lake.
- Day 4: walk the lakeshore or take a bus to Bad Ischl for the Kaiservilla and the Zauner pastry shop, then return to Salzburg.
Lake Wolfgang hotels fill up in summer, so book ahead.
Route 2: Alpine sights and the German border (4 days)
- Days 1 and 2: Salzburg, including Haus der Natur if it rains.
- Day 3: Bus 840 to Berchtesgaden and the electric boat across the Königssee. Boat returns cost EUR 23.40 to St. Bartholomä and EUR 29.80 to Salet. Stay in Berchtesgaden.
- Day 4: train to Werfen for Eisriesenwelt, the ice cave (open 1 May to the end of October only) and falconry at Hohenwerfen Castle, then train back.
In winter, replace day 4 with the Hallein salt mine, which stays open on shorter hours, and the Untersbergbahn once it reopens on 14 December. Expect snow and ice on the mountain.
Route 3: Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck (7 to 8 days)
This is the classic Austrian rail trip. Spend three days in Vienna, then take an ÖBB Railjet to Salzburg, a journey of about 2 hours 22 minutes, with advance saver fares from about EUR 19.90. Give Salzburg two days and a Salzkammergut lake day. A Railjet then runs to Innsbruck in around 1 hour 50 minutes, where two days cover the old town, the Nordkette cable car and the Bergisel ski jump.
Tips for longer stays
- A 72 hour Salzburg Card is EUR 49 for adults in high season and EUR 44 in low season. It does not cover the regional S-Bahn.
- Book Salzburg hotels early for the festival, which runs from 17 July to 30 August 2026, and in Advent.
- Pack for cold if you visit the ice cave or the summits.
