Romantic Luxor: Sunset Felucca and Dinner
Luxor is better known for its antiquities than for candlelit dinners, so the romantic options are few. The ones that exist are good, and nearly all of them involve the river at the end of the day.
Sunset on a felucca
A traditional felucca, with its single lateen sail, is the best hour you can spend together here. A one hour private sail costs about EGP 400 to 600 for the whole boat. The boat glides along the water as the sun drops behind the hills on the far bank, with herons and kingfishers among the reeds. Agree the price and the length of the sail before you board, and ask the captain to stay off the busy section near the ferry landing.
A walk along the corniche
The paved corniche along the east bank is free and best at sunset. Sails pass in silhouette against the far hills, and in the cooler months the air turns pleasant as the light fades. A horse carriage along the corniche costs about EGP 50 to 100, a price to fix in advance for the entire carriage, not per person.
Luxor Temple after dark
Luxor Temple stays open into the evening and is floodlit. The ticket is EGP 500 for adults, paid by card, and a quiet walk through the colonnades after dinner is easy to fit into an evening. Expect fewer groups than at midday.
Dinner for two
A traditional Egyptian dinner for two at Sofra or at Al-Sahaby Lane runs about EGP 600 to 1,200 in total, with dishes like stuffed pigeon, lamb tagine and mezze. The Victorian terrace of the Winter Palace hotel is a historic place for a drink or a slow afternoon, where Agatha Christie wrote parts of Death on the Nile. Check current opening and booking directly with the hotel.
A dawn balloon flight
From September to May, dawn balloon flights drift silently over farmland and desert at sunrise. They cost around USD 40 to 100 per person. Book only a licensed, certified operator. Flights were suspended in summer 2026 because of the heat, and weather cancellations are routine, so keep a spare morning. You can compare certified balloon operators on GetYourGuide .
Karnak by night
The sound and light show at Karnak is a separate ticket, with reseller prices of about USD 42 to 77. See the Karnak sound and light site for the current schedule. For travel conditions, the FCDO advice for Egypt is the authoritative source.

Tip: book the felucca for the hour before sunset, and fix the price and duration before you leave the dock.
