Luxor Activities: Nile, Temples and Balloons
Luxor is cut in two by the Nile, and the day goes smoothly once you plan around the water. The east bank holds Karnak, Luxor Temple, the souk and most hotels. The west bank holds the desert sites, the farmland and the balloon launch fields. There is no pedestrian bridge in the middle of town, so every crossing is by boat or by road.
Crossing the river
The public baladi ferry leaves from the east bank landing near Luxor Temple every 10 to 15 minutes and costs EGP 5 to 10 for a foreigner. A private motorboat runs about EGP 30 to 50 per crossing. The road bridge sits roughly 10 km south of town and carries the buses and taxis, a 30 to 40 minute drive to the west bank sites. Keep a stack of small EGP notes for the ferry, taxis and tips.
The temples
Plan on paying by card at the main ticket gates, and carry small EGP cash for everything else. Adult prices are EGP 600 for Karnak, EGP 500 for Luxor Temple and EGP 440 for Hatshepsut’s temple at Deir el-Bahari. Luxor Temple stays open into the evening under floodlights, which makes it a softer visit than a midday one. The Valley of the Kings is a tiered ticket, covered on the sightseeing page . Flash photography is banned inside the tombs.
Out on the water
A sunset felucca is the easiest evening in Luxor. A one hour sail on a wooden lateen boat costs about EGP 400 to 600 for the whole boat, which carries up to four people. Agree the price, the duration and the pickup point before you step aboard. The corniche on the east bank is also pleasant on foot at dusk, and a horse carriage along it runs about EGP 50 to 100, fixed in advance for the entire carriage.
Balloons at dawn
Dawn balloon flights lift off from the west bank and typically cost USD 40 to 100 per person, including hotel pickup and a boat crossing. Book only a licensed, certified operator, and expect weather cancellations to be routine. Flights were suspended for the summer of 2026 because of the heat, so summer suspensions can happen again. You can compare certified balloon operators on GetYourGuide before you commit.
After dark
Karnak runs an evening sound and light show beside the Sacred Lake, sold on a separate ticket. Reseller prices sit around USD 42 to 77, and the English start is usually 7pm, but check the current schedule on the Karnak sound and light site before you book. The souk, with its spices, alabaster and brass, is best after the heat drops.
Heat and safety
From June to August the temperature reaches 42 to 46C, so finish outdoor sights before 09:30 or wait until after 17:00. Carry bottled water, since tap water is not drinkable. The FCDO travel advice for Egypt names Luxor among the areas outside its restricted zones, and the Tourist Police number is 126. Visas cost USD 30, by e-visa or on arrival.

Tip: cross to the west bank on the first ferry after sunrise, see the desert sites while it is cool, and return to the east bank for lunch.
