Luxor Day Trips: Dendera, Abydos and Edfu
Two of Egypt’s best preserved temples sit within a morning’s drive of Luxor, and neither draws the crowds that Karnak does. Dendera and Abydos make a long but rewarding day, and Edfu and Kom Ombo make an easier one to the south.
Dendera and Abydos
The northern run takes about 9 to 10 hours round trip, driving through farming villages along the Nile. Dendera is the temple of Hathor, known for its colourful astronomical ceiling. Abydos is the temple of Seti I, with finely painted limestone reliefs and the Osireion behind it. A private vehicle for the full day runs about EGP 2,000 to 3,500 per vehicle, which is roughly USD 40 to 70 and splits well between a group. Tours run daily, and your operator will tell you how the road is handled and when to set off.
Start at dawn. Dendera first, then Abydos, keeps the hottest stretch of the day for the car with its air conditioning.
Edfu and Kom Ombo
Heading south, Edfu is about 110 km from Luxor. The Ptolemaic Temple of Horus is one of the most complete in Egypt, and visitors often arrive by horse carriage from the town. Further on, Kom Ombo is a double temple shared by Sobek the crocodile god and Haroeris the falcon god, with a small crocodile museum beside it. Many Nile cruises stop at both, so they also fit into a longer boat journey.
Arranging it
Ask your operator what the price includes: entrance fees are often separate, and the main ticket gates are best paid by card. Carry small EGP cash for tips and snacks. Check the vehicle has working air conditioning and that the driver has a plan for water and breaks. You can compare Dendera and Abydos tours on GetYourGuide and pair them with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities site for official opening information.
What to bring
Pack a hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes and at least two litres of bottled water per person, since tap water is not drinkable. Wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees, which suits temple visits and keeps the sun off your skin. Keep small EGP notes handy for tips and for the toilets at each site, and carry your passport or a copy in case a checkpoint asks.
Heat and timing
From June to August the temperature reaches 42 to 46C, and the temples have little shade. Leave Luxor before 07:00 so the sights are done before 09:30 where possible. The cooler months of October to April are far more comfortable.
For the rest of your stay, the sightseeing page covers the main Luxor temples and tomb tickets.
Tip: book a driver who will stay with you for the whole day, and ask for the Dendera stop first while the light is soft.
