Luxor Attraction Tours: Tickets and Passes
The price on the Valley of the Kings sign is not the price of the Valley of the Kings that most visitors want. Luxor tickets are layered, and a little arithmetic before you queue saves a good deal of money and surprise.
The Valley of the Kings ladder
The general adult ticket is EGP 750 (EGP 375 for students) and admits you to three tombs from a daily rotation of open tombs. The famous ones are extras bought at the main gate before you walk in. Tutankhamun costs about EGP 700 to 750. Seti I costs about EGP 2,000, the most expensive tomb ticket in Egypt. Ramesses V and VI cost about EGP 220. Stack the general ticket with Tutankhamun and Seti I and an adult pays roughly EGP 3,450 to 3,500. The tomb lineup rotates, so confirm which are open on the day. The Valley of the Kings information site lists the general ticket and opening hours.
The big temples
Adult tickets are EGP 600 for Karnak, EGP 500 for Luxor Temple and EGP 440 for Hatshepsut’s temple. Student rates are half. Plan on paying by card at the main ticket gates, and carry small EGP cash for ferries, taxis and tips. Flash photography is banned in the tombs, and phone photos are reported free. The camera permit situation varies by source, so check at the gate.
Is the Luxor Pass worth it?
The Luxor Pass is priced in USD and valid for five days. Standard is USD 130 for adults (USD 70 for students under 30) and Premium is USD 250 (USD 130 for students). Premium adds Seti I and Nefertari. Buy it at the Karnak or Valley of the Kings booths with your passport and passport photos, and confirm the accepted payment at the booth. Add up the core sights separately first: for most visitors the pass costs more than ticketing Karnak, Luxor Temple, Hatshepsut, the Valley of the Kings and a museum one by one. It pays off for a long, packed stay with Seti I and Nefertari on the list.
Museums and evenings
The Luxor Museum is about EGP 400 for adults and is air-conditioned, a good midday refuge. The Mummification Museum is about EGP 220. For an evening, the Karnak sound and light show is a separate purchase, so see the schedule for times. Check your rate and add-ons with a licensed guide, and for a bundled day compare Luxor tours on GetYourGuide against doing it independently.
Timing
June to August the heat reaches 42 to 46C, so be at the gate before 09:30. Between October and April the mornings are comfortable and the queues build later in the day.
Plan your sequence with the two-day Luxor itinerary .
Tip: buy the Tutankhamun ticket only if the extra EGP 700 to 750 matters to you, and spend the money on Seti I or Ramesses V and VI if painted walls are the draw.
