Romantic Getaways in Dili

Dili is a modest choice for a romantic trip. It has no resort strip and no honeymoon industry. What it offers couples is a sunset over the bay, a boat out to look for dolphins, and a quiet stay on Atauro Island where the main entertainment is the sea. Plan these around the weather and the safety points below.

Sunset at Areia Branca

Areia Branca, also called White Sands, is the popular sunset-drinks beach on the coast road east of the centre, according to the official tourism site. Go in the late afternoon, take a seat at one of the places along the shore and watch the light change over the water. Stay on the sand and out of the sea. The UK government says crocodiles are occasionally seen near Dili beaches, and a 2019 report says a crocodile guard was posted here after one was found. Ask your hotel before you enter the water, and head back to town in a taxi once it is dark.

A boat charter for dolphins

Spinner dolphins are seen daily off the north coast, and the whale season runs from about August to November, with blue and sperm whales listed by the official tourism site. A private charter with a dive operator is the most intimate way to look for them. Compass Diving, Dive Timor Lorosae and Moby Wildlife Tours are listed operators. Charter prices are negotiated, so ask for a quote and check that the operator follows the national whale-watching guidelines.

A stay at Beloi on Atauro

Beloi has homestays and dive resorts close to reefs that a 2016 survey recorded as among the richest, with an average of 253 reef fish species per site. The official tourism site names Atauro as the exception to its warning about crocodiles along the coast, so snorkelling here is the water activity to choose. The Berlin Nakroma ferry costs US$4 each way and takes about 2 hours 15 minutes, and a stay of 2 nights is a good length. Dinner on the beach road

Avenida de Portugal is the western beach road, with restaurants and several embassies nearby. Go for an early dinner and arrange a taxi back after dark. The UK government has reported harassment of women on Beach Road, so walk in pairs or groups in daylight, and do not wander the shoreline late at night.
