Overnight Trips from Dili
Three trips are worth more than a day from Dili: a stay on Atauro Island, the long road east to Lautem and Jaco Island, and a night near Mount Ramelau. Each one rewards slowing down, and each one depends on weather and road conditions that change with the season. The UK government warns of poor roads in Timor-Leste and of flooding in the rainy season from November to April, so build spare days into any overland plan.
Atauro Island, two nights or more
A single day on Atauro leaves about four hours ashore, which is little time for the reefs. Staying two or more nights lets you snorkel or dive at a relaxed pace. Beloi has homestays and dive resorts, including Atauro Dive Resort and Beloi Beach Hotel Dive Resort, and Compass Diving, Beni-Marine and the community group ATKOMA also run trips. A 2016 Conservation International survey recorded an average of 253 reef fish species per site, among the richest reefs recorded.
The Berlin Nakroma ferry leaves Porto Dili at 08:00 on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, takes about 2 hours 15 minutes and costs US$4 each way. The Success runs on Tuesday and Friday from Kolmera for US$5 and takes about 3 hours. Both boats return from Atauro at 15:00 on their sailing days, so match your nights to the timetable. Tickets are sold at the port office on the day, in cash, with no online booking. Arrive 60 minutes early and confirm with APORTIL on +670 331 7264. Crossings from December to April are rougher and are sometimes cancelled. The official ferry page has the schedule, and you can compare stays on Atauro when you plan.
Lautem and Jaco Island
Jaco Island is not a day trip. The road from Dili to Tutuala is about 231 km, and travel planners estimate 4 hours 20 minutes at best, while guides say 6 to 8 hours is typical. Beyond Tutuala you reach Valu Beach and a short boat crossing to the island. Lake Ira Lalaro is also in Lautem, in the far east. Plan at least two nights in the east, hire a driver who knows the road and leave early each day. Carry cash in small US dollar notes, because cards are limited.
Mount Ramelau
Mount Ramelau is reached through the village of Hatobuilico and is done as an overnight trip. Ask your accommodation for current road, guide and weather advice before you commit.
Visa and timing
Most visitors get a tourist visa on arrival for US$30 in cash, valid for a single entry of up to 30 days and extendable by another 30 days if you apply at least 15 days before expiry. Your passport needs 6 months of validity and 2 blank pages. Citizens of some neighbouring countries enter visa-free, so confirm your own situation with the Timor-Leste immigration service or an embassy. The UK entry page sets out the details.
