Houmt Souk Attractions and Guided Visits
Organised attraction tours are thin in Houmt Souk. The town does not have a ticketed sightseeing circuit or a set of named operators with fixed prices. What it has is a handful of real sights that are easy to string together yourself, plus a few guided options you can arrange locally. This page sets out the choices and what each involves.
Guided walk through the old quarter
The centre is a souk quarter around the port, not a walled old city. A local guide can take you through Souk Errbaa, the jewellers’ lanes, the Central Market and the funduqs, which are the two-storey trading inns built around courtyards. Some have been restored as hotels, restaurants and workshops. Expect two to three hours. Agree the length and the fee before you set off.
Half-day island loop by taxi
A taxi driver can link Houmt Souk with Erriadh (about 8 km), Guellala (about 20 km) and Midoun (about 15 km) in a single morning or afternoon. Taxis are metered, so ask the driver to quote a rate for waiting time at each stop and keep the meter on for the transfers. At Erriadh you can walk the Djerbahood murals. At Guellala you can watch potters work and visit the museum. Midoun has a market and the east-coast beaches. The El Ghriba synagogue at Erriadh is an active place of worship under tight security, and the sightseeing page covers how to visit it.
Ras Rmel boat trip
Boats sail from the Houmt Souk fishing port or marina toward Ras Rmel, the low sandspit marketed as Flamingo Island. The sail takes about 30 to 60 minutes depending on the operator, and a full package runs about six hours with lunch usually included. Flamingos are present from October to May and are not guaranteed on any given day. Some boats are dressed as pirate ships. Prices vary widely between listings, so compare several. Do not assume the water is calm or safe for swimming, and keep children close on board.
Djerba Explore museum and heritage village
About 20 km east of town, the Djerba Explore park holds the Lalla Hadria museum, a private collection of more than 1,000 pieces of Islamic art, textiles, carpets, illuminated manuscripts, ceramics and jewellery from the 7th to the 20th century. A heritage village sits alongside it. One ticket, about 32.5 to 37 TND for adults and 24 TND for children, also covers an animal enclosure that is best skipped on welfare grounds.
Booking tips
- Ask what is included: entry fees, lunch, hotel pick-up and the length of each stop.
- Confirm the guide’s route before you pay, especially if you want to avoid the animal enclosure.
- Carry cash in Tunisian dinars (TND) for tips and market stops.
- Book boat trips for the morning, which is cooler.
Listings for guided visits and boat days can be compared on Viator . Opening details for the fortress are on the heritage authority page , and the Djerbahood site describes the Erriadh murals. The FCDO advice for Tunisia lists the regional warnings.
