Romantic Accra: Dinners, Jazz and Gardens
Accra is a city for evenings, music and gardens rather than for a beach holiday. Couples will find a handful of confirmed places to build a trip around, and fewer polished romantic packages than in resort destinations, so this page keeps to what could be checked. Prices are in cedis (GH₵), at about 11.7 to the US dollar. Cards and mobile money work mainly at hotels and upmarket venues, so carry cash as well.
An evening of live jazz
+233 Jazz Bar & Grill is on Dr Isert Road in North Ridge. It hosted the Ghana Jazz Experience on 30 April 2026, so it was trading this year, and the venue site is the place to see the current programme. Older listings put the cover charge at about GH₵10 to 40, so ask when you book. Check the schedule before you go, because live nights are not guaranteed every evening. An event listing confirms that April date.
Dinner in Osu
Osu’s Oxford Street, which is the local name for Cantonments Road, is the main dining and nightlife strip. Restaurants come and go there, and several venues named in online listings could not be confirmed as trading, so choose a place that is open when you arrive. Try Ghanaian dishes such as banku with grilled tilapia, red-red, or kelewele, the spiced fried plantain sold by evening street vendors. Take a ride-hailing app home, since Uber, Bolt and Yango show the fare upfront, and agree the price first if you use a yellow-fender taxi.
A cool morning at Aburi
Aburi Botanical Gardens are on the Akuapem Ridge about 35 km and an hour from the city. They open daily from about 8:30 to 17:00. The air is cooler at 450 m, and the royal palm avenues, silk cotton trees and bamboo make a shaded morning walk. No fee was confirmed, so ask at the gate.
Art together
The Artists Alliance Gallery at Omanye House on the Accra-Tema Beach Road sells art, masks and carved coffins, and is listed as operating in 2026. Plan an hour or so for browsing, and ask about prices before you buy.
A lodge or resort day
Ada Foah, about 110 km and two hours east, is where the Volta meets the Atlantic, and boat trips run on the estuary. Aqua Safari Resort is the named resort, with day passes listed at GH₵400 for adults in 2024, though its 2026 status is unconfirmed. Bojo Beach, west of the city, is reached by a short canoe crossing of the Densu river, and the fee covers the crossing. Check both before you plan around them. Stays in Accra can be compared by area.
The sea is not for swimming
Do not plan a swim or a sunset paddle at Accra’s beaches. The UK Foreign Office says swimming is dangerous along the southern coast because of rip tides and undertows, and the main beaches have no lifeguards. Bojo sits between sea and river, so its ocean side is rough. La Pleasure Beach at Labadi was cleared in October 2026, and readers should check whether it has reopened. Boat trips are available on the Volta at Ada Foah and Akosombo, rather than from Accra’s own shore.
Small safety notes
Malaria is present all year, and evenings are when mosquitoes bite, so use repellent. Pickpocketing and bag-snatching are rising in Accra, so keep phones and cameras out of sight in busy streets.
