Ghana for Couples: Savannah Lodge Stays
Romantic getaways in Ghana
Ghana is not a honeymoon-resort country, and the romantic options are few. What it offers instead is a single standout stay in elephant country, a cool hill garden an hour from Accra, and a quiet stretch of western coast. Plan around those three and the trip hangs together. Prices here are in Ghana cedis (GH₵), at about 11.7 to the US dollar in early October 2026, and they move.
A savannah lodge above the waterholes
Zaina Lodge, inside Mole National Park in the Savannah Region, is Ghana’s best-known luxury safari stay. Tented chalets have private outdoor showers, an infinity pool overlooks two watering holes where elephants bathe, and dinner can be served under the open sky. Rates start from about US$330 a night, or roughly GH₵3,900, so check dates and rooms on Booking.com and confirm what is included.
Getting there takes planning. Mole is never a day trip from Accra, since the road is about 690 km and 10 hours. Fly Accra to Tamale in about an hour, then drive roughly 2.5 hours. Park entry is GH₵60 per foreign adult, and a ranger-led walk costs GH₵20 per person per hour; walks are armed, and elephants must be given room. The park’s own pages are at molenationalpark.org . The US government advises reconsidering travel to parts of northern Ghana, including areas of the Savannah Region, so read the US advisory and the UK FCDO’s Ghana advice before you book.
Aburi’s hill gardens
Aburi Botanical Gardens, about 35 km north of Accra on the cool Akuapem ridge, has palm avenues and shaded paths, including the pergola walk called Lovers’ Lane. Entry is about GH₵20. Go on a weekday morning, pack a picnic, and treat it as a gentle first or last day around your flights.
The western coast
Busua and the Axim coast in the Western Region are quieter than the beaches near Accra. Fly Accra to Takoradi in about 40 minutes or take the long road. The sea needs respect: The Atlantic along Ghana’s open coast carries strong rip currents and heavy shore break, so swim only where locals are swimming, never alone and never at night. Take sunset walks on the sand and keep swimming to a hotel pool.
Entry and health
UK and US passport holders need a visa, applied for on the official e-visa portal at evisa.immigration.gov.gh , where you can check the current fee. A yellow fever certificate is required, and without one you may be refused entry or vaccinated on arrival. Malaria is present across Ghana all year, so ask a travel clinic about prophylaxis before you fly and use repellent from dusk.
Money and timing
Carry cash in cedis for gates, markets and shared transport; larger Accra hotels and restaurants take cards, and mobile money is widely used. Carry extra cedis if you head north, because cards are rare outside the big hotels.
Verdict: if the budget allows one splurge, make it two nights at Zaina Lodge, with Aburi on the way out and a quiet coast stay afterwards. For other ways to fill the days, see the multi-day trips page .
