Accra Overnight Trips: Cape Coast and Volta
Accra suits trips of two or three nights, and each option below has a clear logic: the Central Region coast, the Volta, the surf town of Kokrobite, or the city itself. Prices are in cedis (GH₵), at about 11.7 to the US dollar. Traffic out of Accra is slow in the morning and late afternoon, so travel early and add time for the Kasoa junction on the road west.
Cape Coast overnight
Cape Coast is about 145 km from Accra, and the drive is about three hours each way, though it can take four. A night there lets you avoid doing the castles and Kakum in one rushed day.
The first day is for the castles. Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle are UNESCO World Heritage sites and memorials to the slave trade, and visitors come to learn and to reflect. Each charges about GH₵80 for a non-Ghanaian adult, and the fee should be confirmed at the gate. The Cape Coast Castle page lists daily opening from 9:00 to 16:30. Allow a long visit at each, and plan nothing lively afterwards.
The canopy walk at Kakum, about 30 km north of Cape Coast, is a separate morning. The walkway is 333 m long, up to 27 m high, with seven bridges, and groups go with a guide. Check the fee at the gate.
Volta region
Akosombo and Ada Foah suit a two-night plan. Akosombo day tours run about 8 to 13 hours and include a lake cruise, so a night nearby makes the day less rushed. Ada Foah is about 110 km and two hours from Accra, where the Volta meets the sea, with boat trips to Crocodile Island and mangrove channels. Aqua Safari Resort is the named stay there, but its 2026 status is unconfirmed, so ask before you book. The ocean beach at Ada is on the southern coast, where swimming is dangerous because of rip tides and undertows. Compare stays near Ada Foah before you decide.
Kokrobite overnight
Kokrobite is west of the city, about 45 to 60 minutes by car. It is a backpacker beach town known for surfing. Mr Bright’s Surf School at Big Milly’s is the listed school, with a coach who works as a beach lifeguard. Its 2026 status and lesson prices could not be confirmed, so contact them first. The beach has no lifeguard, surf only at low tide, and do not swim for pleasure in the open sea.
Two days in Accra
For a city break, use day one for the Jamestown lighthouse, Ussher Fort Museum and Brazil House, then Makola Market. Day two covers Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, the National Museum at 2 Barnes Road, and an evening in Osu. The park’s fee is GH₵100 for non-Ghanaian adults, and the museum charges GH₵80. Our 2-day Accra itinerary lays out the timings.
What not to add on
Tafi Atome is in the Volta Region and is not a day-four add-on from Accra. Lake Bosomtwe is about 250 km away. Treat each as a separate trip with its own nights.
Practical notes
Book stays and transport ahead for weekends and for December, when large events fill the city. Malaria is present all year, so use repellent at dusk and ask a clinic about medicine. Keep valuables out of sight, because the Foreign Office says pickpocketing and bag-snatching are rising in Accra. Cash in cedis is needed for tro-tros and markets.
