Philippines Day Trips by Island Hub
Day trips in the Philippines, by island hub
A good day out here starts from the island you are already on. The country is an archipelago, so Boracay, Bohol and Palawan are overnight destinations from Manila, each needing a flight or a long ferry, and the realistic day trips are overland from a hub or one short ferry hop.
From Manila: Tagaytay ridge
Tagaytay sits about 60 km south and takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic on the South Luzon Expressway. The ridge looks down on Taal Lake and the volcano cone. Taal Volcano Island is a PHIVOLCS Permanent Danger Zone, so the ridge view is how to see it, and boats onto the lake are off the menu. Lunch is the draw: bulalo, a beef-shank and marrow soup, at the ridge restaurants, with pineapple and espasol sold roadside. Check the PHIVOLCS site for the current alert level.
From Manila: Mount Pinatubo
Pinatubo’s crater lake is in Capas, Tarlac, and the day starts around 03:00 to 04:00 for a drive of roughly 2.5 hours. A 4x4 crosses the grey lahar canyon, then a stream-side walk of 30 to 45 minutes leads to the rim and the turquoise lake. Choose a package that includes the 4x4, permits and a guide, and ask for the all-in price before you pay.
From Cebu City: Kawasan Falls
Badian is 3 to 3.5 hours south of Cebu City. Canyoneering down the Matutinao River takes 3 to 4 hours of walking, swimming and jumping, ending at the tiered falls. A licensed guide, life vest and helmet are mandatory. After rain the river runs strong, so go only when guides say conditions are fine. Compare Kawasan canyoneering tours if you want transport arranged.
From Cebu City: a ferry to Bohol
Cebu and Bohol are separate islands, divided by the Cebu Strait, so there is no bus link. The OceanJet fast ferry takes about 2 hours each way, leaves Pier 1 from roughly 05:10 and costs ₱880 in tourist class (₱1,320 business). Plan a long day: a pre-arranged driver from Tagbilaran can reach the Chocolate Hills at Carmen (₱150 non-resident adult), the Corella tarsier sanctuary, a Loboc River lunch cruise and Baclayon Church before the evening sailing. Times and fares are on oceanjet.net . An overnight stay makes this far more relaxed.
From Puerto Princesa: Sabang
The Underground River is about two hours by van from Puerto Princesa. Entry is limited to 900 visitors a day, so confirm your permit first at the city portal .
Season and safety
Habagat and typhoon season run roughly June to November, and boat services can stop at short notice when the Coast Guard raises a signal. Do not schedule a ferry day for the last day before an international flight. Carry cash for entrance fees, tricycles and lunch. See the Coast Guard site for gale warnings.
Verdict: if you have one free day in Manila, take Tagaytay. If you are in Cebu, the ferry day is worth it only with an early start. More detail on longer plans is on the multi-day trips page .
