Manila Activities: Where to Start
Metro Manila is too spread out to see in one pass, so the useful move is picking a district for the day rather than chasing a checklist across the whole metro. Traffic decides more of a Manila itinerary than distance does, and clustering activities by neighborhood is the difference between a relaxed day and one lost in Grab traffic.
Old Manila in one morning
Intramuros holds most of the city’s history inside 4.5 kilometers of Spanish-era wall. Fort Santiago (₱75 adult, ₱50 discounted) covers the citadel and the Rizal Shrine; San Agustin Church, a UNESCO World Heritage listing, and Casa Manila (₱75) round out a two-to-three-hour loop. A guided Intramuros walking tour with a licensed guide adds context the plaques skip, and the Intramuros Administration site lists current hours before you go.
Right next door, the National Museum Complex (Fine Arts, Anthropology, Natural History) is free under Republic Act 11333 and open daily, including Mondays. Budget at least two hours for the Anthropology building alone if the San Diego shipwreck cargo interests you.
A paid museum worth the entry fee
Ayala Museum in Makati charges ₱425 general adult admission (a resident tier runs lower, so bring ID if you live locally) for its pre-colonial gold collection and dioramas. The Ayala Museum site takes advance bookings and the museum is closed Mondays. The Mind Museum in BGC is the better pick with children in tow; see the family-activities page for its tiered pricing.
Chinatown at lunch
Binondo is the world’s oldest Chinatown, founded in 1594. Walk Ongpin Street for lumpia, dumplings and hopia, and duck into the Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo Ruiz. No booking needed; just go hungry.
One day trip
Pick a single day trip rather than two, since Manila traffic eats the difference. Tagaytay ridge gives caldera views over Taal Lake without any crater landing (the island itself is a Permanent Danger Zone). Corregidor now runs through Bataan-based operators rather than the old CCP ferry pier; a Corregidor day tour covers the boat transfer and guided tram tour; join-in tours from Mariveles run about ₱2,800 per person, more with Manila transfers.
Evening anchor
Poblacion in Makati is the city’s densest strip of small bars and restaurants, walkable and open late. For an overnight stay near the action, compare Makati and BGC hotels before committing to a district.
Tip: Buy a Beep card at any LRT or MRT station on arrival; it works across all three rail lines and saves the queue for single-journey tokens later in the trip.
