Overnight Trips from Houmt Souk, Djerba
Most multi-day plans from Houmt Souk fall into two shapes. One is a stay on Djerba itself, using the town as a base for the island’s villages and east coast. The other is a two to three night loop through southern Tunisia by licensed 4x4 operator, returning to the island at the end. This page describes both.
Option 1: a Djerba base stay
Houmt Souk has the island’s working port, souks and fortress, and it makes a practical base for several days. A sample rhythm:
- Day one: the fortress, Souk Errbaa, the fish market and the heritage museum on foot.
- Day two: a taxi or bicycle to Erriadh for the Djerbahood murals, then on to Guellala for pottery workshops.
- Day three: Midoun and the east-coast beaches, or a boat to Ras Rmel for the flamingos from October to May.
Accommodation in town includes restored funduqs. The resort strip east of the town has larger hotels, and some offer thalassotherapy. Taxis are metered, and cars and scooters can be hired for the flat island loop. Ride bicycles early in the day in summer.
Option 2: a southern Tunisia loop
A 2 to 3 night loop uses a licensed 4x4 operator and covers the following:
- Matmata, where Berber families dug courtyards and rooms into the ground.
- The Tataouine ksour, fortified granaries with stacked vaulted cells called ghorfas.
- The hilltop villages of Chenini and Douiret.
- Optionally Douz and Ksar Ghilane, if the operator offers them.
Journey times and prices depend on the operator and the route, so ask for them in writing. Tataouine town lies about 130 to 145 km by road from Houmt Souk. Matmata is reached over the causeway or the Ajim-Jorf ferry.
Safety on mainland routes
Check the UK FCDO map before you book. Its warnings cover a band along the Libya border, including Ben Guerdane, Remada and Dehiba, and parts of western Tunisia. Ask any operator to keep clear of those areas. Djerba itself is not named in the warnings.
Money, heat and supplies
- Carry Tunisian dinars (TND) in cash. Cards and euros work at some hotels only.
- Keep exchange slips, since the dinar cannot be converted outside Tunisia.
- In summer the desert south is very hot, so carry plenty of water.
- Mainland ferries can queue in bad weather, so build in spare time on the day you return.
Getting to and from the island
The airport at Djerba-Zarzis is about 9 km from Houmt Souk, a drive of roughly 15 minutes. Taxis from the airport should be metered, or agree the fare first. Louages leave from the Houmt Souk station for Zarzis, Medenine, Gabes and Tataouine.
Hotel options in town and on the east coast can be compared on Booking.com . The FCDO travel advice for Tunisia gives the current regional map, and the island’s UNESCO listing describes the wider settlement pattern.
