Family Days in Houmt Souk, Djerba
Houmt Souk is an easy town for families because the main sights are close together and the island is flat. Children can climb a fortress, look at models of old Djerban life, watch pottery being made and, in season, spot flamingos from a boat. This page lists what works best, with the safety points that matter for younger visitors.
Borj El Kebir
The 15th-century fortress by the port has ramparts, a moat and plenty of room to explore. The stairs are steep and some edges drop away, so keep children by the hand and supervise them closely on the walls. Winter hours are 09:30 to 16:30 and summer hours 08:00 to 17:00. The fort is closed on Fridays. Entry for non-residents is 8 TND. Guide sites give other figures, so confirm at the gate.
Museum of the Traditional Heritage of Djerba
Models and reconstructed scenes make this museum easier for children than a typical gallery. Rooms cover costume, jewellery, farming, fishing and pottery. A shop and cafeteria are on site, which helps with a rest break. Opening times are 09:30 to 16:30 in winter and 09:00 to 17:00 in summer, and the museum is closed on Fridays. Hours can be erratic, so ask at your hotel before you go.
Ras Rmel boat trip
Boats leave the port or marina for the Ras Rmel sandspit, with a sail of 30 to 60 minutes each way and a full package of about six hours. Lunch is usually included. Flamingos are seen from October to May but are not guaranteed. Some boats are dressed as pirate ships, which children enjoy. Keep life jackets on small children, stay close to them on deck and in the water, and do not count on calm seas.
Guellala pottery
About 20 km south of town, Guellala is the island’s pottery village. Workshops line the main street, and potters fire jars and plates in wood-burning kilns. Many will let you watch the work. The village museum shows life-sized scenes of weddings and olive oil pressing, which suit school-age children. Go by taxi, because the village is not within walking distance.
Djerba Explore museum and heritage village
The Lalla Hadria museum and the heritage village at Djerba Explore, about 20 km east of Houmt Souk, add a cultural stop. A single ticket, about 32.5 to 37 TND for adults and 24 TND for children, also covers an animal enclosure. Families who prefer to avoid it can spend their time in the museum and village.
Morning at the fish market
Early in the day the fish auction by the port is a lively sight, with buyers bidding and the crier perched on a high chair. Stay back from the buyers, hold hands in the crowd and go in the morning, since timing varies.
Beaches, sun and water
Some Djerba beaches fly flags. Ask locally about conditions, and supervise children even where a lifeguard is present. Summer heat is severe, so carry water, wear hats and plan outings for the morning.
Practical points
- Metered taxis are easy to find. Check the meter is on.
- Carry Tunisian dinars (TND) in cash for cafes and souks.
- The airport is about 9 km from town.
