Monaco for 2 to 3 Days: Base and Day Trips
Monaco has no multi-day excursions of its own. The principality covers about 2 square kilometres, and its main sights fit into two days. What works over longer stays is a base-and-day-trip plan: two days in Monaco and a third day on the coast by train. This page lays out that plan with the opening rules that shape it.
Where to sleep
Hotels in Monaco are expensive, and many visitors sleep in Nice instead, about 20 to 23 minutes away by train, then come in for the day. Nightly rates change with the season and events, so compare current prices on Booking.com for both bases.
Day 1: Monaco-Ville and Monte-Carlo
Start on the Rock. The free Changing of the Guard is at 11:55 on Place du Palais, and the Cathedral next door is free and holds the tombs of Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace, so keep quiet and dress modestly. The State Apartments open roughly from spring to mid-October, with an adult ticket of EUR 13, so check the palace site for dates. The Oceanographic Museum is nearby at EUR 22.50 for adults. In the afternoon, walk down to Casino Square, where the atrium of the Casino de Monte-Carlo is free to enter from 10:00. Finish at Port Hercule in the evening and take the public lifts back up.
Day 2: casino, garden and coast
If you want the casino morning visit (EUR 20, 10:00 to 13:00, last entry 12:15), do it first, since relaxed dress is accepted and the guide comes to your phone. The games rooms open from 14:00 for adults with ID, for EUR 20 including EUR 10 of credit, and residents of Monaco may not gamble. In the afternoon, visit the Jardin Exotique, which costs EUR 12 for the garden alone or EUR 15 with the guided Observatory Cave. Hours and tours are on the garden’s page . Larvotto beach is free for a swim afterwards, but keep swimwear to the beach because you can be fined for wearing it on the streets. Walkers can instead follow the Cap d’Ail coastal path, about 3.6 km from Plage Marquet to Plage Mala.
Day 3: Èze or Menton
Pick one. The Èze option is a regional train to Èze-sur-Mer, then the Nietzsche Path, about 2.1 km and 400 m of climb, roughly an hour. Menton is 10 to 12 minutes from Monaco, with the Cocteau museum (EUR 5, closed Tuesdays) and a covered market. On a Friday, Ventimiglia in Italy has a seafront market from 07:00, and you should carry a passport or ID.
Timing your trip
The busiest and priciest weeks are the Grand Prix (4 to 6 June 2027) and the Monaco Yacht Show (22 to 25 September 2027). Other dates are the E-Prix on 1 and 2 May and the Rolex Masters from 3 to 11 April, both 2027. The palace, museum and garden restrict access over Grand Prix weekend. Buses are often free during announced event windows, so check the schedule.
