Ljubljana: 7 Day Trips Worth the Drive
Ljubljana is a small capital that works best as a base. The lakes, caves and coast that fill most Slovenia trips all sit within a couple of hours, but the ones between the sites themselves connect badly by bus, so this is the family of day trips a rental car is built for. Rentals start around EUR 27 a day and earn that back the moment a trip combines more than one stop. Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge
Bled is the icon: an island church on a glacial lake under a cliff-top castle. Go at opening, since tour buses swamp it by mid-morning. The pletna boat is EUR 20 return cash, Bled Castle EUR 19. Pair it with the Vintgar Gorge, 4km outside town, where a boardwalk runs through a river canyon for EUR 15; as of 2026 it sells in hourly timed slots, so book at least 48 hours ahead in peak summer.
Lake Bohinj
Bohinj sits 30km past Bled inside Triglav National Park and gets a fraction of the crowds for comparable Julian Alps scenery. The Vogel cable car climbs to 1,535m for EUR 28 return. If Bled is for the photograph, Bohinj is for actually swimming and sitting somewhere quiet.
Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle
Postojna, about 55km southwest, holds a constant 10C, so bring a layer even in August. The cave tour is EUR 34.90 for an adult; Predjama Castle, built into a cliff face nearby, is EUR 24 alone. Combined bundles run roughly EUR 55 to 85 and the package names vary between sellers, so check the current inclusions at postojnska-jama.eu before you pay.
Skocjan Caves
Skocjan, a UNESCO site about 75km southwest via the A1 (exit Divaca), is the more dramatic of the two cave systems, a collapsed doline and underground canyon rather than a chamber walk, and far less crowded than Postojna. Tours run roughly EUR 16 to 24 depending on season; confirm at park-skocjanske-jame.si .
Piran and the Adriatic coast
Piran is about 120km, 1h20 to 1h40 by car, with a car-free Venetian-Istrian old town. Park at the Fornace garage on the edge of town (EUR 1.20 an hour, EUR 14.40 daily cap) and walk in. It is a completely different Slovenia: salt air, tight lanes and a bell tower over a tiny harbour.
Soca Valley and Kranjska Gora
The Soca Valley, 2 to 2.5 hours away via Tolmin and Kobarid or the scenic Vrsic Pass, centres on the turquoise Soca river and its rafting scene, a genuine full day rather than an add-on. Kranjska Gora, an alpine resort near the Italian and Austrian borders, is 1h30 to 2h out and skis December to early April.
