Day Trips from Kaikoura: Hanmer and Blenheim
Day trips from Kaikōura
Kaikōura is a stop on a South Island road trip rather than a hub, and few places make a comfortable day trip from here. The wildlife tours already fill most of a day, so the best use of your time is usually staying put. Two longer drives are possible, both with a lot of time behind the wheel.
Check the roads first
Kaikōura had severe flooding in July 2026, and some roads were damaged. Before driving Route 70 (the Inland Kaikōura Road) or any road into the hills, check NZTA Journeys and the Kaikōura District Council for current conditions. Detours run via Cheviot.
Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools
Hanmer Springs is about 130 km away, a drive of roughly 1.5 to 2.25 hours via Route 70 and Waiau. A return trip is a full day of driving for a few hours in the pools.
Pool prices on the official pricing page are:
- Online Saver: adult about $40, child (5 to 15) about $23, senior (60+) about $27.
- Flexi: adult about $43, child about $25, senior about $30.
- Children under 5 are free.
The Cascade pools were closed for refurbishment when prices were checked in October 2026. See the Hanmer Springs pricing page .
Marlborough wine country
Blenheim is about 130 km north of Kaikōura, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way. The Wairau and Awatere valleys have cellar doors, and the region suits a drive north toward Picton more than a same-day return. Check cellar door hours before you set out, and never drive after tasting: book a driver or a guided wine tour instead. Compare options on Viator .
A half-day coast drive
A shorter option is the stretch of SH1 north of town, which takes a morning or an afternoon:
- Ōhau Point lookout, about 25 km north, a free roadside viewpoint over a fur seal colony. There is a pull-off for about 20 vehicles. Seal pups are born mainly in summer.
- Nin’s Bin, on SH1 at Half Moon Bay about 15 to 20 minutes north, a crayfish stop open since 1977.
- Karaka Lobster at Okiwi Bay, about 30 minutes north on SH1. Check its hours.
- Hapuku, further north, home of Hapuku Lodge.
Stay on the lookout at Ōhau Point. The shoreline below it is closed to the public as part of the fur seal sanctuary.
Tours into Kaikōura
Christchurch day tours run into Kaikōura, including a Whale Watch day trip with Canterbury Leisure Tours at about $320. The Coastal Pacific train also offers a day option, with prices from about $285 to $503. The train runs daily from 1 September to 30 April only. See the Coastal Pacific page .
Tips
- Plan wildlife tours before a long drive, not after. Boats cancel in rough seas, and a spare morning helps.
- If your time is short, a Peninsula Walkway section and the Ōhau Point lookout cover most of the scenery.
