Romantic Kaikoura: Stays and Stargazing
A romantic weekend in Kaikōura
Kaikōura pairs mountains with an open Pacific coast, which suits couples who want dark skies, good food and a comfortable bed more than a packed programme. Prices are in New Zealand dollars. Hotel rates change by date, so treat the figures below as a guide and check before booking.
Where to stay
- Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses (Station Road, Hapuku, north of town on SH1): five tree houses set in a native kānuka grove, four lodge suites and an olive-grove cottage. One night for two in March 2026 started at about $1,155, so expect luxury pricing. See the Hapuku Lodge website .
- Sudima Kaikōura (114 Esplanade, corner of Yarmouth Street): a 120-room, 4.5-star hotel on the shoreline, with the Hiku restaurant and a heated outdoor infinity pool.
- The White Morph (92 Esplanade, Heritage Collection): suites and premium rooms with spa baths. Rates run from about $169 to $590 depending on the room and season.

Stargazing
Kaikōura Dark Sky Sanctuary was designated on 12 September 2024. It covers about 2,039 km², roughly 98% of the district, and leaves out the town itself, so drive a short way from the streetlights. Moana Skies runs stargazing tours year-round from Inland Kaikōura Road, with an “Explore the Cosmos” evening of about 90 minutes from about $109 and a Seal Kayak and Stargazing combination from about $240, with a full weather refund. Prices change, so check with the operator. Check road conditions on Route 70 with NZTA Journeys before driving there.
Time on the water
- Whale Watch Kaikōura: adults about $185, with an 80% refund if no whale is seen. The VIP Captain’s Cabin is about $265. See the Whale Watch FAQ .
- Kaikōura Kayaks: a Sunset Evening Classic paddle is listed, along with private tours. Ask the operator for prices.
A crayfish picnic
Buy crayfish from Nin’s Bin on SH1 at Half Moon Bay, about 15 to 20 minutes north, which has operated since 1977. Alternatively, Kaikōura Seafood BBQ on Fyffe Quay serves crayfish, mussels and whitebait fritters, with half a crayfish from about $45. Hours at both can change, so check first.
A slower day
Walk part of the Peninsula Walkway from the town centre to the Point Kean viewpoint, about 4.4 km one way. Stay at least 20 m from any seal and let it keep a clear path to the water. The tide can block the shoreline at high water and the cliff edges have no fences, so keep to the marked track.
Tips
- Boats cancel in rough seas, so book the water activities for the first day of your stay.
- Seasickness is common on boats, so go easy on breakfast.
- Dress warmly for stargazing, even in summer.
