Kaikoura Multi-Day Stays and Itineraries
Staying several days in Kaikōura
Kaikōura is usually one to three nights on a longer South Island loop. This page covers how to arrive, how to fill a stay and where to sleep. Prices are in New Zealand dollars and were checked in October 2026.
Getting here
- By road: Kaikōura is 183 km north of Christchurch and 154 km south of Picton on SH1. Allow about 2.5 hours from Christchurch. Check NZTA Journeys and the Kaikōura District Council for road conditions before you leave, after flooding in July 2026.
- By train: the Coastal Pacific runs between Christchurch and Picton daily from 1 September to 30 April only. It does not run from 1 May to 31 August, or on Christmas Day. Trains arrive in the morning heading north and leave in the afternoon heading south. Call 0800 872 467 for times. See Great Journeys New Zealand .
- By coach: InterCity coaches serve Kaikōura daily. There is no town bus.
A two or three night plan
Day 1: Whale Watch Kaikōura or a scenic flight, then Fyffe House, the Heritage New Zealand cottage at 62 Avoca Street.
Day 2: an early dolphin or albatross trip, then a section of the Peninsula Walkway in the afternoon.
Day 3: the Ōhau Point lookout on SH1, about 25 km north, a crayfish stop at Nin’s Bin and then onward.
Keep one spare morning, because boats cancel in rough seas.

Tips
- In summer, book the dolphin swim first, since it sells out.
- Seasickness is the main medical issue on boats, so leave the first morning flexible.
- Stay at least 20 m from seals when you walk the coast.
