Four Day Trips From Amman, Ranked
Amman sits close enough to four separate worlds that a day trip is genuinely a day trip: no route below needs an overnight, unlike Petra or Wadi Rum further south.
Jerash and Ajloun Castle, the northern loop
Jerash, one of the best-preserved Greco-Roman provincial cities anywhere, is 48 km north, about 50 minutes by car. Walk through Hadrian’s Arch, the Oval Forum ringed by 56 Ionic columns, and the 800-meter colonnaded Cardo Maximus with its chariot-wheel ruts still visible. Entry is 10 JOD, free with the Jordan Pass. Ajloun Castle, a 12th-century fortress built by Saladin’s nephew, is another 20 km west; entry is 3 JOD. A taxi for the round trip with waiting time runs roughly 40 to 50 JOD, or take a coaster bus from North Station (Tabarbour) for 1.50 JOD each way.
Madaba, Mount Nebo and a Dead Sea float
Madaba, 33 km southwest, holds the Church of St. George and its 6th-century Madaba Mosaic Map of the Holy Land, made from 2 million stone cubes; entry is 1 JOD. Mount Nebo, 10 km further, is where the tradition holds Moses viewed the Promised Land; the memorial church protecting its 4th-century mosaics costs 3 JOD. From Nebo it’s a 25-minute descent to the Dead Sea shore. Public access at Amman Tourist Beach runs about 20 JOD; a hotel day-pass at Mövenpick Resort Dead Sea or Kempinski Hotel Ishtar, with pool access and mud baths, runs 40 to 60 JOD. Bring hard-soled water shoes for the salt crystal shelf at the shoreline, and float on your back; the water is 34% salinity and stings badly in the eyes.
The Eastern Desert Castles
Highway 40 runs east into flat basalt desert to three Umayyad sites: Qasr Amra (85 km, a UNESCO-listed 8th-century bathhouse with rare early Islamic frescoes), Qasr Al-Kharana (65 km, a square fortress with arrow slits and corner towers), and Qasr Al-Azraq (100 km, T.E. Lawrence’s headquarters during the 1917-1918 Arab Revolt). One combined ticket covers all three for 3 JOD, free with the Jordan Pass. A private taxi for the loop runs about 50 to 60 JOD.
As-Salt, the Ottoman hill town
As-Salt, 30 km northwest and 35 minutes by car, was once the region’s administrative capital, built across three hills of yellow limestone. The marked Harmony Trail winds through historic stairways and 19th-century Ottoman merchant mansions; access is free.
The verdict
Jerash-Ajloun and Madaba-Nebo-Dead Sea are the two loops most first-time visitors should pick between; the desert castles and As-Salt reward a second or third day trip once the highlights are done.
