The Amman to Petra and Wadi Rum Circuit
Petra is 235 km south of Amman, 3 to 3.5 hours each way on the highway, which rules out a casual day trip: a round trip alone eats 6 to 7 hours before any time at the site. Every route below is built around at least one overnight instead.
The Golden Triangle, 3 to 4 days
Day one runs Amman to Wadi Musa (Petra town) via Mount Nebo and Madaba on the King’s Highway, arriving in time for Petra by Night, a candlelit walk through the Siq to the Treasury. Day two is a full day inside Petra itself: the Siq, the Treasury (Al-Khazneh), the Street of Facades, the Royal Tombs, and the 800 stone steps up to the Monastery (Ad-Deir) for those with the legs for it. Day three moves to Wadi Rum for a 4x4 jeep safari through red sandstone canyons and dunes, overnighting in a Bedouin camp or a dome tent under a dark desert sky. What the Petra ticket actually costs
Petra’s entry fee is tiered, not flat. Visitors staying at least one night somewhere in Jordan pay 50 JOD for a 1-day pass, 55 JOD for 2 days, or 60 JOD for 3 days. Same-day visitors who are not overnighting anywhere in the country, cruise passengers and cross-border day-trippers mainly, pay a flat 90 JOD instead. The King’s Highway, 2 days
The older, slower route south follows the ancient 5,000-year-old trade road: Madaba, the 1,000-meter chasm of Wadi Mujib, sometimes called the Grand Canyon of Jordan, the Crusader-era castle at Karak with its vaulted underground corridors, and the Dana Biosphere Reserve , run by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature. It’s a scenic alternative to the Desert Highway for travelers with a rental car and no fixed schedule, and it lands in Petra by the second evening.
The Jordan Trail, Dana to Petra
The Jordan Trail is a 675 km long-distance route across the country; its best-known segment runs from Dana Biosphere Reserve to Petra, 72 km over 4 days, descending from juniper highlands through desert wadis into Petra’s back-door entrance. It’s ranked among National Geographic’s greatest multi-day hikes and needs proper trekking fitness and a guide familiar with the route’s water points.
The verdict
Three to four days covers the Golden Triangle comfortably; anything shorter means cutting either Wadi Rum or a full Petra day, which is the wrong place to save time.
