Petra Tours: Club Cars, Guides, Night Show
Travel advisory, October 2026: Jordan is affected by the wider regional conflict involving Iran that began in 2026. At the time of writing, the US State Department rates the whole country Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”, and Level 4, “Do Not Travel”, for the borders with Syria and Iraq and a few named areas. The UK FCDO advises against travel only within 3 km of the Syrian border and gives no warning for Petra, Wadi Musa or Wadi Rum. Petra and Wadi Musa are open, but flights can be disrupted and conditions can change at short notice. Read the US State Department advisory and the UK FCDO advice before you book and again before you fly.
Most Petra visitors buy a ticket at the gate and walk. The services below sit on top of that ticket, and the prices are the official ones in Jordanian dinars (JD).
Entry tickets
Visitors who sleep at least one night in Jordan pay 50 JD for one day, 55 JD for two consecutive days or 60 JD for three. Children under 12 enter free in daylight. Day visitors who do not stay overnight, such as people crossing from Eilat, pay 90 JD for a single day. The Jordan Pass costs 70, 75 or 80 JD for one, two or three Petra days. Bring cash, in JD or US dollars.
Club cars
The Petra authority runs electric club cars from the Visitor Center to the Treasury for 15 JD one way or 25 JD both ways. They run daily from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, and there is no advance booking. Very young children ride free. Other legs link the Petra Theatre, Qasr al-Bint and Abu Oleg, from 5 to 15 JD one way. The walk itself is about 2 km and takes 30 to 45 minutes, so the car mainly helps tired or less mobile visitors.
Licensed guides
Official guide rates are 50 JD for the Main Trail, 100 JD for the Main Trail plus the High Place of Sacrifice and 100 JD for the Main Trail plus the Monastery. A guided Al-Khubtha walk and a guided Little Petra visit are each 50 JD. A guide is optional on the main routes.
Petra by Night
The night walk runs Sunday to Thursday, 8:30 to 10:30 pm, and costs 30 JD per person. Children under 10 are free. It starts at the Visitor Center, follows a candlelit Siq to the Treasury and ends with a projection show on the facade. Tickets are sold in person on the day at the Petra by Night office in the Visitor Center. Online and advance booking is temporarily unavailable. You need a valid daytime ticket or Jordan Pass to buy one, and the night ticket is not covered by the pass. Bad weather cancels the show, so confirm at the office that afternoon. Details are on petrabynight.jo .
Back road to the Monastery
A shuttle runs from the Visitor Center to the Nabatean Cultural Village near Little Petra, and an official 4x4 transfer from there costs 5 JD per person each way. Show a valid Petra ticket at the Little Petra office. This route spares you the long walk in, but the 800 or so steps up to the Monastery remain.
Other tours
The tethered Petra Balloon rises about 300 m in Wadi Musa. Jeep tours of Wadi Rum are sold as long day trips from Wadi Musa, so agree the price and pickup time before you go. Treat animal rides inside Petra with caution. Horses, donkeys and camels work in the park, welfare groups have documented overloading, and reports say handlers press hard for tips. The walk and the club car are better choices.
