Day Trips from Gansbaai: Hermanus to Agulhas
Choosing a Day Out
Distances from Gansbaai run from a short hop to a full day behind the wheel, so pick one or two stops rather than trying to see everything. Fill the tank before you leave, keep the fuel above half, and plan to be back before dark, since driving after dark is the riskiest part of any trip here.
Hermanus
Hermanus lies about 40 to 45 km along the R43, a drive of roughly 40 minutes. It is the easiest add-on. The main sights are the cliff path and the Old Harbour, and the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley lies beyond town if you want an afternoon of wine. Marine Dynamics sells a shuttle from Hermanus to Kleinbaai at R700 per person if you would rather not drive to a boat trip.
Stanford and the Klein River
Stanford is a small village roughly 20 km north of Gansbaai on the Klein River. It is known for local wine and cheese, and it suits an unhurried lunch stop.
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve
The reserve is on the R43 between Stanford and Gansbaai. Visits are by booked tour only. The Florilegium Half Day Tour costs R1,250 per person for South African residents and R1,950 for international visitors, runs Wednesday to Sunday, and takes about 4.5 hours. The minimum age is 12, and groups are capped at 10. Book well before your trip.
Cape Agulhas
Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, is about 110 km from Gansbaai and takes about 2 hours by sealed road. At 2 hours each way, that makes it a long day. A new lighthouse precinct opened in April 2026 with an interpretation centre, a 1 km boardwalk and the Needles Restaurant. The lighthouse itself dates from 1848. Check opening hours and the entry fee with SANParks before you leave, and start early.
Elim
Elim is a Moravian mission village founded in 1824 that is still owned by the church and protected as a heritage village. From the Gansbaai side the route runs along gravel through Baardskeerdersbos, so allow extra time and check road conditions first. Do not expect a quick tar drive. If you are heading on to Agulhas, the sealed road is the faster choice.
De Hoop
De Hoop Nature Reserve is a long drive with a partly gravel route, and it does not suit a short Gansbaai day trip. Plan it as a separate trip rather than an add-on.
