Cape Point and the Peninsula loop: car or tour required

The Winelands: tram, transfer, or a sober driver

Whale season runs roughly June through November, with September and October the best window and July a cheaper, quieter option with reliable sightings. No realistic bus or train serves this route; a self-drive of about 1.5 to 2 hours or a guided day tour are the honest choices. Aquila: the real Big Five day trip

Kruger is not a day trip from Cape Town

Verdict: if the schedule only allows one of these, take the train to Boulders Beach and Simon’s Town. It needs no car, no tour operator and no designated driver, and the penguins are worth the trip by themselves.
