Distance is what separates a real Athens day trip from one that only works as an overnight, and the two categories get mixed up more often than they should.
Cape Sounion
Roughly 70km southeast, about 1 to 1.5 hours by car or KTEL bus , Cape Sounion is the lowest-effort option here. The Temple of Poseidon itself takes 30 to 45 minutes; the rest of the trip is the drive and the sunset wait that makes the visit worthwhile.
Hydra, Aegina and Poros
All three Saronic islands are genuine solo day trips by ferry from Piraeus, not Rafina. Hydra bans motor vehicles and has arguably the prettiest harbor of the three; Aegina is closest and has its own Temple of Aphaia; Poros sits nearest the mainland coast. Visiting one properly beats trying to combine two or three into a single rushed day.
Delphi
At around 180km and 2.5 to 3 hours’ drive, Delphi is a real full-day commitment, 5 to 6 hours in transit alone, built around the Temple of Apollo and the Oracle’s ancient significance. Don’t plan a second stop the same day.
Nafplio and the Peloponnese

Meteora doesn’t fit this list
At roughly 350km and 4 to 4.5 hours each way, a same-day Meteora round trip means 13 to 14 hours in transit for only 4 to 5 hours at the site, seeing the landscape and perhaps 2 to 3 monasteries.
