Busan Day Trips Worth Taking

One day trip is genuinely essential, two more are strong options, and one requires a passport. Here’s how they rank.
Gyeongju: the top day trip, no contest
The former capital of the Silla kingdom, often called “the museum without walls” for its density of archaeological sites. Gyeongju’s UNESCO listings include Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, the royal tumuli burial mounds, and the separately listed Yangdong Folk Village. About an hour from Busan by KTX or bus, which makes it an easy single day rather than an overnight commitment. Search Busan-Gyeongju day tours if you’d rather not sort out the connections yourself.
Tongyeong: the coastal alternative
Nicknamed the “Naples of the East” for its harbor and island scenery, roughly 1.5 hours from Busan by bus. The mural-covered Dongpirang Village and the Hallyeo Waterway cable car, with panoramic views over the archipelago, are the two reasons to go. Pair it with Geoje Island, just south, if you want an overnight rather than a single day.
Haeinsa Temple: further, and worth an overnight
A major mountain temple in Gayasan National Park, first built in 802 and home to the Tripitaka Koreana , the complete Buddhist canon carved onto 81,350 wooden printing blocks and stored there since 1398. UNESCO-listed in 1995. It’s further from Busan than Gyeongju or Tongyeong, genuinely better as an overnight than a rushed single day.
Fukuoka, Japan: the one that needs a passport
High-speed hydrofoil ferries, the Beetle and Kobee services, cross the Korea Strait between Busan and Hakata Port in roughly 3 to 3.5 hours each way. This needs a valid passport and meeting Japan’s current entry requirements, and it’s not a comfortable same-day round trip for most visitors without careful planning around ferry times.
Which one to actually pick
If you only have one extra day, it’s Gyeongju, not close. If you have two, add Tongyeong for the coast rather than repeating temples at Haeinsa. Check hotel rates in Busan before you go if any of these turn into an overnight rather than a day trip.
