Where to Stay in Busan: Best Areas

Busan is hillier and more spread out along the coast than Seoul, so the area you pick matters more here than in a compact city. Base yourself near a metro line regardless of which district you choose. Check current Busan hotel rates before you book, especially around BIFF week in October.
Haeundae: the beach-resort pick
Busan’s flagship beach district: Korea’s most famous stretch of sand, a dense line of hotels along the boardwalk, and the LCT towers behind it. The default first choice if beach access is the priority, and it’s well served by the metro despite being some distance from the old downtown.
Gwangalli: hipper, and cheaper for the same coastline
A smaller, less resort-heavy beach with a real cafe and bar scene, and the postcard view of Gwangan Bridge lit up at night from your own doorstep. A strong mid-range base for anyone who wants beach access without Haeundae’s scale or prices.
Seomyeon: the transit-central choice
The downtown hub where metro Lines 1 and 2 cross, dense with shopping, food, and nightlife. Not a beach base, but the most metro-convenient pick in the city if you’d rather prioritize getting around over waking up near the water.
Nampo-dong and Jagalchi: old downtown, central for sights
The historic core near Jagalchi Market and BIFF Square, atmospheric and central for sightseeing rather than beach access. Good value, and a short walk from Busan Tower and Yongdusan Park.
Busan Station and Choryang: rail-convenient
The obvious pick if you’re arriving by KTX from Seoul or continuing on by train, adjacent to a foreigners’ shopping street with a notable Russian-signage commercial strip.
Which area actually fits your trip?
Beach-first trip: Haeundae or Gwangalli. Sightseeing-first trip: Nampo-dong. Day-tripping to Gyeongju or arriving by train: Busan Station. Splitting a longer stay between two areas, beach for a few nights and Seomyeon or Nampo-dong for the rest, is a genuinely good way to see both halves of the city without long metro rides every day.
