One event is worth building a trip around; the rest are worth knowing about if your dates happen to line up.
Busan International Film Festival (BIFF): 6-15 October 2026
Founded in 1996 and now widely regarded as Asia’s most prestigious film festival, BIFF runs every October at the Busan Cinema Center in Centum City. The 2025 edition screened 241 films from 64 countries. Even without a festival ticket, Haeundae and Nampo-dong are visibly livelier for the whole week, and BIFF Square in Nampo-dong keeps the film-festival street-food energy year-round.
Busan International Fireworks Festival
Held at Gwangalli Beach, typically in autumn, timed to the Gwangan Bridge backdrop that’s already the beach’s main draw on any given night. Confirm the current year’s exact date before booking a Gwangalli hotel around it; branding and scheduling have shifted in past years.
Haeundae Sand Festival
A sand-sculpture and beach festival at Haeundae Beach, described as Korea’s only sand-themed eco-festival, held during the warmer months. Expect the beach at its busiest even by Haeundae’s already-crowded summer standards.
Haeundae Polar Bear Festival
A winter cold-water plunge tradition at Haeundae Beach running since 1988, typically held in January. Watching is free and arguably more comfortable than participating.
Busan Jagalchi Festival
An autumn seafood festival at Jagalchi Market under the slogan “Oiso! Boiso! Saiso!” (Come! See! Buy!), with fish-catching events, seafood tastings, and performances layered onto the market’s usual routine.
When to actually plan around one of these
If BIFF is the reason for your trip, book Haeundae or Nampo-dong accommodation well ahead: October is already one of Busan’s best-weather months, and the festival stacks demand on top of that. For everything else, treat the date as a bonus if it lines up with a trip you were taking anyway, not a reason to build one from scratch.
