Brisbane Walking Routes and Free City Walks
Walking in Brisbane: free guided walks and self-guided routes
Brisbane is flat enough along the river and compact enough in the CBD to see a lot on foot. The easiest start is a volunteer-led walk, with self-guided routes for the rest. Prices below are in Australian dollars. Carry water and start early, since UV is extreme most of the year and summer afternoons bring storms.
Brisbane Greeters
Brisbane Greeters offers free volunteer-led walks of 2 to 4 hours, booked through the Brisbane City Council events and booking page. The 2026 programme lists 7 city walks and 11 suburban walks, and an example Greeter’s Choice walk starts at City Hall. Book ahead, since small groups fill up. See the Brisbane Greeters site .
City centre heritage circuit
A self-guided loop of the CBD takes in King George Square and City Hall (1930), the Albert Street Uniting Church, the Old Windmill on Wickham Terrace, St John’s Cathedral and Customs House with its copper dome from 1889. The Old Windmill is described as among the oldest surviving colonial structures in Brisbane. Anzac Square, between Ann and Adelaide Streets, is Queensland’s state war memorial with its Shrine of Remembrance and Eternal Flame, so walk through it quietly.
Howard Smith Wharves and the New Farm Riverwalk
The Riverwalk links New Farm to Howard Smith Wharves, about 870 metres by one source, and it is a fixed structure, not a floating one. The swing-bridge section has had servicing closures in 2026, and parts of the CBD Riverwalk near Waterfront Brisbane have been closed, so check Brisbane City Council’s closure notices before you set out. Wilson Outlook Reserve at 231 Bowen Terrace is a small grassy cliff-top park facing the Story Bridge. Do not walk to Eagle Street Pier, which was demolished for the Waterfront Brisbane development.
The Story Bridge closes to vehicles from 27 December 2026 until about 18 January 2027, and the eastern footpath stays open to pedestrians.
City Botanic Gardens to South Bank
Walk through the City Botanic Gardens and cross the Goodwill Bridge, a pedestrian bridge, to the Arbour at South Bank. From there Streets Beach is a free swim, which suits a hot day. Do not swim in the river itself, since bull sharks are recorded far upstream.
Fortitude Valley, James Street and Brunswick Street Mall
These are street-level wandering areas, with laneways, shops and cafes. Valley Fiesta, a free festival in Brunswick Street Mall, was held on Saturday 3 October 2026 in its 30th year, and it runs each October. Brisbane Powerhouse at New Farm is also running events in 2026.
Guided options
For a commercial guide, look up Brisbane walking tours on GetYourGuide . The TransLink flat fare of 50 cents makes it cheap to start a walk in one suburb and ride home from another.
