Multi-Day Sydney: Car, Coast or Flight
A genuine multi-day trip out of Sydney is either a real overnight drive or a flight, and mixing the two up is how a Sydney stay ends up with a wasted travel day in the middle of it.
The South Coast, a real car-based extension
Kiama, Jervis Bay and the Grand Pacific Drive sit south of the Royal National Park, the drive crossing the Sea Cliff Bridge on the way down. Jervis Bay’s dolphin and whale watching and the white sand at Hyams Beach are the genuine draws, and 2 to 3 nights suits the driving distance far better than trying to squeeze it into one long day. Hunter Valley, worth an overnight
The same roughly 2 to 2.5 hour drive as the day-trip version, but staying 1 to 2 nights removes the designated-driver limit on tasting and suits travellers who want more than one afternoon among the cellar doors. A second day also leaves time for the smaller cellar doors a rushed single-day visit tends to skip entirely.
Melbourne, Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef: flights, not extensions
Melbourne is about a 1-hour flight, roughly 870km and 9 hours by road as the alternative. Uluru is about a 3-hour flight into the outback interior, with no sensible drive option available. The Great Barrier Reef, around Cairns, is also roughly a 3-hour flight, about 2,400km to the north. Treat each as its own dedicated multi-day trip built around a flight, never as something folded into a Sydney stay. Byron Bay, further north still
Beyond the South Coast trips above, Byron Bay realistically means a flight into Ballina or the Gold Coast, or a long drive, not a Sydney day trip under any transport mode.
