Romantic Brisbane by River and Hill
Romantic Brisbane by river, hill and vineyard
Brisbane’s romance is mostly about light on the water: a sunset from a hilltop, a drink under a bridge or a slow ride down the river. Prices below are in Australian dollars and come from operator pages at the time of writing.
Dinner and drinks at Howard Smith Wharves
This riverside precinct sits under the Story Bridge and is the city’s easiest date-night stop. Felons Brewing Co. and the overwater bar Mr Percival’s are among the venues, though Mr Percival’s 2026 status was not specifically confirmed, so check before you go. Stanley, a Cantonese restaurant run by chef Louis Tikaram in the heritage-listed building, has been operating since 2019. Other venues change, so see the Howard Smith Wharves site for the current line-up and book a table in advance for weekends.
Sunset picnic at Wilson Outlook Reserve
Wilson Outlook Reserve on Bowen Terrace, New Farm, is a small, free, grassy park on a clifftop facing the Story Bridge. Bring a blanket and a picnic and time your arrival for the hour before sunset.
Mt Coot-tha at dusk
The Mt Coot-tha lookout is free and gives panoramic views over the city. The Summit Restaurant & Bar reopened in May 2025 under Mantle Group after a revitalisation, and the cafe stayed open throughout. Council lists route 471 from Ann Street for the Botanic Gardens stop and the Summit, but bus numbers changed in 2025, so confirm in the TransLink journey planner. There is no cable car, so you go by road or bus. Driving after dark on a winding road needs care.
An evening on the river
A CityCat costs 50 cents per journey, and the CityHopper ferry is free. Both give a cheap ride on the water as the light fades. The CityHopper stops at Howard Smith Wharves and South Bank, so you can combine a ride with dinner. The river is for looking, not swimming, because bull sharks live in it.
Twilight on the cliffs
Riverlife at Kangaroo Point lists a twilight kayak from $99 with an adult minimum age of 18, although another listing shows a higher price, so confirm when booking. The twilight abseil is also $99. Details are on the Riverlife site .
A wine and food day on Tamborine Mountain
Tamborine is about 70 km away, so you need a car or a tour. Witches Falls Winery at 79 Main Western Road and Cedar Creek Estate are both here, and the Curtis Falls walk fits between tastings. If you are tasting, arrange a driver or join a tour rather than driving yourself.
Rooftop views at Queen’s Wharf
The Sky Deck at Queen’s Wharf is a free public space, open daily when weather allows. The bars and restaurants on that level are the paid part. A listing gives hours of 6:30 to 22:30 from Sunday to Thursday and to midnight on Friday and Saturday, but confirm on the Queen’s Wharf site .
