Atlanta Tours: Fox Theatre, Oakland, Rangers
Atlanta’s guided options range from free ranger programs to ticketed theater tours and private film location outings. This page covers the ones with published details and says where details are thin. Tours here are run by the venues and operators named, not by this site, so confirm times before travelling.
Fox Theatre Architecture and History Tour
The Fox Theatre on Peachtree Street opened in 1929 as a Moorish-style movie palace. Its public tour is the Architecture & History Tour, which lasts about 60 minutes and walks through the theater’s interiors and history. Everyone, including children, needs a ticket, and the tour starts promptly, so arrive at least 10 minutes early. Expect walking and some stairs, and wear comfortable shoes. Accessible tours can be arranged by contacting the theater. The theater lists no public price on its tours page, so the booking page has the current figure.
Deeper tours are private only. The Mighty Mo organ tour, which includes a private performance on the 1929 Moller organ, and the Behind-the-Scenes tour both need a group of at least 10 tickets. Groups can email tours@foxtheatre.org or call 404-881-2092. Seasonal offerings include October ghost tours, film tours held two hours before Coca-Cola Film Series screenings, and holiday tours from Thanksgiving to late December. Details are on the Fox Theatre tours page .
National Park Service ranger programs
The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park offers free ranger programs in Sweet Auburn. Ranger-led Birth Home tours resumed after the home reopened in July 2026. They hold 15 people and are filled on the day, first come, first served, so ask at the visitor center when you arrive. Rangers also give daily talks inside Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, which remains an active congregation. The park opens from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and the temporary visitor center operates from Historic Fire Station No. 6. Treat these programs as a place of remembrance and keep voices low. The park’s Birth Home page lists current rules.
Historic Oakland Cemetery
Oakland Cemetery was founded in 1850 and is free to enter from dawn to dusk. The official site lists a general Oakland Tour that runs daily at 10:30 a.m., and guided walks cost about $12 for adults in press listings. Self-guided maps cost about $5, and app and phone audio tours are also offered. Notable burials include Margaret Mitchell, golfer Bobby Jones and Maynard Jackson, the city’s first Black mayor.
Film and television location tours
Several private and small-group operators run outings of about three hours that visit sets and locations from productions shot in Georgia, including Marvel films, Stranger Things and The Walking Dead. One longer format combines a studio visit at Trilith Studios with a drive past Tyler Perry locations. Prices vary widely by operator and format, so compare current listings.
Getting there
MARTA rail connects the airport, downtown and Midtown. A single MARTA trip costs $2.50, and the Atlanta Streetcar costs $1 and runs downtown to Sweet Auburn, but not to Midtown. Fares are on MARTA’s fare page . To compare private outings, search Atlanta film location tours on GetYourGuide .
