Travel advisory: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup, and the country remains in an active civil war. Most governments, including the US State Department and the UK FCDO , currently advise against travel to Myanmar, so check your own government’s latest guidance before you book anything. Where you spend your money here isn’t a neutral choice, so this guide leans toward areas and independent guesthouses over any specific big-brand recommendation, for if and when a trip is safe and ethical.
We’re not going to hand you a single “best hotel” pick here. Some internationally known hotel brands in Myanmar have documented or alleged links to the military, and that changes over time, so instead of naming a chain and hoping it still holds up, here’s how to pick by area and what to budget, then do your own quick check on whoever you book with.

1. Downtown
The walkable colonial core, near Sule Pagoda, City Hall, and Bogyoke Aung San Market. This is the right base if you want to cover most of the sightseeing on foot and stumble into tea shops and street food along the way. Runs budget to boutique; it’s the most atmospheric, and most decayed-in-a-good-way, part of the city. Search downtown Yangon guesthouses on Booking.com and filter by review score rather than star rating, it’s a more honest signal here.
2. Kandawgyi or Inya Lake
Leafier, quieter, more upscale, with the tradeoff that you’ll be relying on taxis or Grab for most sightseeing rather than walking. Good if you want a pool and some distance from downtown’s noise and heat in the evening. The Strand Hotel, a restored 1901 property on Strand Road near downtown rather than the lakes, is the best-known heritage address in this price range if you want a genuine colonial-era stay; check current ownership and guest reviews before booking any specific property, heritage doesn’t equal neutral.
3. Pazundaung
Budget guesthouses, less polished, cheaper, and still a reasonable taxi ride from downtown. Worth considering if your budget is doing more work than your itinerary.
Before you book
Do a five-minute search on whoever you’re about to pay for a room, specifically whether the property has any documented military ownership or linkage; this shifts over time so a fixed list here would go stale fast. When in doubt, a small independently run guesthouse sidesteps the question entirely and usually costs less anyway.
