Venice: 3-Day First-Timer Plan
Three days is the ideal first trip: enough for the famous sights and a real island day, without ever feeling rushed. This plan keeps a gentle pace, two big things a day and time left to get pleasantly lost. Prices are 2026 figures, so treat each as verify on site.
Day 1: the city core
Reach Piazza San Marco early. St Mark’s Basilica on your timed slot (nave free, dress code enforced), then the Doge’s Palace next door (about EUR 30 to 35), booked ahead. A slow bacaro lunch, then the Rialto Bridge and a wander through the lanes as the afternoon light softens.
First-timer tip: pre-book both sights so your first day is about looking, not lining up.
Day 2: Dorsoduro and the canals
Ride vaporetto Line 1 down the Grand Canal (EUR 9.50) to Dorsoduro. Pick just one museum, the Accademia or the Peggy Guggenheim, so you are not overloaded, then walk the Zattere waterfront and end the evening at Campo Santa Margherita with a spritz among locals.
First-timer tip: cross the Grand Canal on the standing traghetto ferry for a couple of euros; it is a small thrill and a real shortcut.
Day 3: the lagoon islands
Buy a 24-hour vaporetto pass (about EUR 25) and head out early from Fondamente Nove to Burano for the painted houses, then Murano for the glass on the way back. The islands are exempt from the access fee, and this is the day most first-timers remember best.
First-timer tip: go to Burano first thing, before the tour boats arrive, for empty canals and bright morning colour.
