Venice: 2-Day First-Timer Plan
If it is your first time and you only have two days, do not try to see everything. This plan keeps it gentle: the essential city core on foot the first day, then the Grand Canal and one easy island on the second. Two big sights a day is plenty. Prices are 2026 figures, so treat each as verify on site.
Day 1: the city core on foot
Start at Piazza San Marco early, before the crowds. Go into St Mark’s Basilica on your timed reservation, the nave is free, and remember the dress code covers shoulders and knees. Next door, spend a couple of hours in the Doge’s Palace on a booked ticket (about EUR 30 to 35). Have a relaxed bacaro lunch nearby, cicchetti at EUR 1 to 3 with a glass of wine, then walk over to the Rialto Bridge in the afternoon and just wander the lanes around it.
First-timer tip: book both the Basilica and the Doge’s Palace before you arrive, so day one is walking, not queuing.
Day 2: the Grand Canal and Burano
Take vaporetto Line 1 slowly down the Grand Canal from Santa Lucia (single EUR 9.50, or a 24-hour pass about EUR 25). Sit at the back and enjoy the palazzi. In the afternoon, catch the ferry from Fondamente Nove out to Burano to see the painted houses; it is the easiest, prettiest island trip and it is exempt from the access fee.
First-timer tip: buy the 24-hour pass in the morning so the canal ride and the Burano ferry are both covered by one ticket.
