Venice: First-Trip Tips and Mistakes
Most first trips to Venice go wrong in the same few ways, and all of them are easy to avoid once you know them. This is the mistakes list rather than a general etiquette guide: fix these eight and a first visit is smooth, cheap and calm instead of hot, expensive and stressful.
1. Over-packing
There are no cars, and the route from any dock to your hotel crosses stepped bridges. A big hard suitcase becomes a real ordeal. Pack light, in a bag you can carry up steps.
2. Not booking the big two
St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace both take timed online bookings, and turning up hoping to walk in during peak season means long queues or a wasted slot. Book both before you travel; the Doge’s Palace runs about EUR 30 to 35 (verify on site).
3. Day-tripping instead of staying over
The city empties in the evening, and it is a genuinely different, calmer place after the day-trippers leave. Staying overnight also makes you exempt from the access fee. A cruise-stop afternoon shows you the worst of Venice, not the best.
4. Eating at the photo-menu places
A laminated menu with pictures and a tout at the door means a tourist trap, thick on the Lista di Spagna and around San Marco. Do a bacaro instead: cicchetti at EUR 1 to 3 and a glass of wine, standing at the bar.
5. Expecting a gondola down the Grand Canal
Gondolas loop the small side canals, not the Grand Canal, and the rate is fixed at EUR 90 for 30 minutes daytime, per boat, cash. For the Grand Canal itself, ride vaporetto Line 1 for EUR 9.50.
6. Forgetting to validate your ticket
Tap your vaporetto ticket or pass at the dock every time, even a multi-day pass. An unvalidated ticket can still draw a fine from an inspector.
7. Skipping the access-fee check
On roughly 29 tagged days between April 3 and July 26, 2026, day-trippers must register and pay EUR 5 to EUR 10 to enter the centre (verify on site at cda.ve.it). Overnight guests are exempt but still need a free QR voucher, usually arranged by the hotel. Check this before you travel, not at the station.
8. Wearing the wrong shoes
Stone underfoot is uneven and often wet, and in the acqua alta months from late October to early March a low square can flood ankle-deep. Bring flat, grippy, water-tolerant shoes.
