Varanasi 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
A full week is our 6-day plan plus one slow final day, real downtime rather than another fixed sight crammed in before departure. Price everything in rupees, near record lows through 2026, verify the same-day rate before you book anything. If a week feels like too much, our 5-day and 4-day itineraries cut the same route down.

Day 1: Arrival and the anchor evening
Land at VNS airport or Varanasi Junction; prebook a taxi, roughly INR 600-850 sedan. Base at Assi Ghat. Evening: the free Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh, roughly 6:45pm summer, 5:45pm winter. If your route passes Manikarnika or Harishchandra, no photographs of pyres, bodies or mourners, ever.
Day 2: Sarnath, the full day
Sarnath sits roughly 10km out, or book the half-day tour above; see Incredible India’s Sarnath page or the Archaeological Survey of India’s page for background. The Dhamek Stupa marks the Buddha’s first sermon; the Sarnath Museum , closed Fridays, holds the four-lion Ashoka capital, India’s national emblem, foreigner site entry roughly INR 100-300.
Day 3: Silk, street food and Bengali Tola
Buy silk independently in Thatheri Bazaar or Vishwanath Gali; a driver’s tip usually means a 3-5x markup and a 20-40% commission. Kachori Gali for breakfast, Blue Lassi Shop to close the day.
Day 4: Ramnagar Fort and the heritage walk
The 18th-century fort holds vintage cars, an armory and a 19th-century astronomical clock; see Incredible India’s page . Cash only, roughly INR 50-150. Afternoon, book the guided heritage walk above.
Day 5: BHU, Bharat Kala Bhavan and the quiet ghats
BHU’s campus and the Bharat Kala Bhavan museum, then Tulsi Ghat and Namo Ghat, both quiet and free, in the afternoon. If the food walk from the box above has not fit in yet, this is a good slot for it.
Day 6: The flex day
Build around Dev Deepawali, Kartik Purnima, 24 November 2026, if your dates land there, booking accommodation and any boat months ahead since fares run 2-4 times normal that week. Otherwise, a second unhurried pass through the silk quarters or a genuine rest day, both defensible on a trip this length.
Day 7: A slow morning, and one last respectful walk
Does a week in Varanasi actually need a full seventh day, or is it just extra travel time? It earns its keep as downtime, not a new sight. Use the morning for whatever the trip’s rushed spots deserved a second look, then walk one last time to the ghats as a bookend, not a rerun; if the Ganga Aarti view from a boat was a highlight earlier in the week, this is a reasonable morning to repeat it quietly rather than force in something new.
Finish any silk shopping independently in Thatheri Bazaar or Vishwanath Gali, cash in hand, no last-minute “recommended shop” from a driver on the way to the airport. Transfer back to VNS airport or Varanasi Junction, the same 40-70 minute window as arrival day; prebook the car rather than negotiate at the curb on your way out.
