Varanasi 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Four days is our 3-day plan plus a fourth day across the river at Ramnagar Fort and a guided heritage walk, still built around Sarnath and the old city rather than a repeat sunrise boat ride. Day 1: Arrival and the anchor evening
Land at VNS airport (roughly 25-26km out, 40-55 minutes normal traffic, up to 70 at peak) or Varanasi Junction station. Prebook a taxi by WhatsApp or an app, roughly INR 600-850 sedan, rather than an unbooked cab at INR 1,200-1,800. Base at Assi Ghat, the calmer first-timer stretch of the riverfront.
Evening: walk to Dashashwamedh Ghat for the free Ganga Aarti, roughly 6:45pm summer, 5:45pm winter, arriving 30-45 minutes early. If your walk passes Manikarnika or Harishchandra, the working cremation ghats, no photographs of pyres, bodies or mourners, ever, and keep a quiet, respectful distance.
Day 2: Sarnath, the full day
Sarnath sits roughly 10km out, 30-45 minutes each way, or book the half-day tour above. The Dhamek Stupa marks the Buddha’s first sermon, see the Archaeological Survey of India’s Sarnath page for the excavation history; the archaeological site runs roughly 6am-6pm, foreigner entry about INR 100-300, and the Sarnath Museum , 9am-5pm, closed Fridays, holds the four-lion Ashoka capital, India’s national emblem. Add Chaukhandi Stupa if you have a car for the day.
Day 3: Silk, street food and Bengali Tola
Buy silk independently in Thatheri Bazaar or Vishwanath Gali, never through a driver’s recommendation, that detour runs 3-5 times fair value on a 20-40% commission. Walk Kachori Gali for kachori-sabzi and tamatar chaat (roughly INR 30-60 each), spend an hour in Bengali Tola’s back lanes, and close at Blue Lassi Shop, a small cup roughly INR 120. The temple core has been formally vegetarian and dry within 2km of Kashi Vishwanath since 2024.
Day 4: Ramnagar Fort and the heritage walk
Is Ramnagar Fort worth the crossing? Marginal yes, once the essentials are covered. The 18th-century red sandstone fort, built in Mughal style by Maharaja Balwant Singh, holds vintage cars, royal costumes, an armory and a 19th-century astronomical clock; see Incredible India’s Ramnagar Fort page for the full collection. Pay cash only, foreigner entry roughly INR 50-150, hours roughly 9am or 10am to 5pm.
In the afternoon, book the guided heritage walk above through the ghats and old city for historical context a self-guided walk will not supply. Free evening, or repeat the Ganga Aarti if the first night was a highlight, this time from the ghat steps at a quieter, less crowded stretch.
