Day 1: Arrival and the anchor evening

Land at VNS airport or Varanasi Junction station; prebook a taxi, roughly INR 600-850 sedan. Base at Assi Ghat. Evening: the free Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh, roughly 6:45pm summer, 5:45pm winter. If your route passes Manikarnika or Harishchandra, no photographs of pyres, bodies or mourners, ever.

Day 2: Sarnath, the full day

Sarnath sits roughly 10km out, or book the half-day tour above; see the Archaeological Survey of India’s Sarnath page for background. The Dhamek Stupa marks the Buddha’s first sermon; the Sarnath Museum holds the four-lion Ashoka capital, India’s national emblem, foreigner entry roughly INR 100-300 for the site.

Day 3: Silk, street food and Bengali Tola

Buy silk independently in Thatheri Bazaar or Vishwanath Gali; a driver’s tip usually means a 3-5x markup and a 20-40% commission. Kachori Gali for breakfast, Blue Lassi Shop to close the day.

Day 4: Ramnagar Fort and the heritage walk

The 18th-century fort holds vintage cars, an armory and a 19th-century astronomical clock; see Incredible India’s page . Cash only, roughly INR 50-150. Afternoon, book the guided heritage walk above.

Day 5: BHU, Bharat Kala Bhavan and the quiet ghats

BHU’s campus and the Bharat Kala Bhavan museum, then Tulsi Ghat and Namo Ghat, both quiet and free, in the afternoon.

Day 6: The flex day this itinerary length actually buys you

Is a sixth day worth adding, or is it filler? Genuinely worth it, and it is the day previous itineraries in this family skip. If your dates land on Dev Deepawali, Kartik Purnima, 24 November 2026, this is the day to build around it: millions of lamps lit across every ghat after sunset, book accommodation and any boat months ahead, since fares alone run 2-4 times normal that week. Outside that window, use the day for a second, unhurried pass through Thatheri Bazaar with cash in hand and no guide attached, or simply rest; the sensory intensity here, crowds, heat, constant touts, adds up faster than a comparably sized European city trip, and this itinerary length is long enough to actually admit that rather than push through it.

If you are traveling July through September, note the monsoon genuinely floods the lower ghats; as recently as mid-July 2026 the regular aarti site went underwater and boats were banned, so build slack into whichever day you had planned around the river.
