Varanasi 3 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Three days is our 2-day plan with Sarnath and the old city split back into two proper days instead of one rushed one, plus a full third day for silk and street food. Price everything in rupees, near record lows through 2026, verify the same-day rate before you book anything. Want Ramnagar Fort worked in too? That is what our 4-day itinerary is for.
Book these before you go:
- A hotel near Assi Ghat
- A half-day Sarnath tour on GetYourGuide
- A Varanasi food walk : book ahead if you want the street-food stops narrated rather than hunted down solo

Day 1: Arrival and the anchor evening
Land at VNS airport, roughly 25-26km out (40-55 minutes normal traffic, up to 70 at peak) or at Varanasi Junction station. Book a taxi ahead by WhatsApp or an app; prebooked sedans run roughly INR 600-850 against INR 1,200-1,800 unbooked. Base at Assi Ghat, the calmer, first-timer-friendly stretch of the riverfront.
In the evening, walk toward Dashashwamedh Ghat for the free Ganga Aarti, starting roughly 6:45pm in summer and 5:45pm in winter; arrive 30-45 minutes early. If your route passes Manikarnika or Harishchandra, the working cremation ghats, no photographs of pyres, bodies or mourners, ever, and keep a quiet, respectful distance throughout.
Day 2: Sarnath, given a full day this time
Sarnath sits roughly 10km out, 30-45 minutes each way by auto-rickshaw, or book the half-day tour above if you would rather not arrange transport. The Dhamek Stupa marks where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after enlightenment, a genuinely distinct tradition from the Hindu ghats in the city center; see the Archaeological Survey of India’s Sarnath page for the excavation history. The archaeological site runs roughly 6am-6pm, foreigner entry about INR 100-300; the Sarnath Museum , 9am-5pm, closed Fridays, foreigner entry about INR 100, holds the four-lion Ashoka capital, India’s national emblem. Add Chaukhandi Stupa , a five-minute stop marking where the Buddha met his first five disciples, if you have a car for the day. Back in Varanasi by mid-afternoon, keep the evening light.
Day 3: Silk, street food and Bengali Tola
Is the silk-shopping detour actually worth it? The silk, yes; the detour a driver or stranger suggests, usually not. Buy independently in Thatheri Bazaar or Vishwanath Gali; a tout-recommended “government approved” shop runs 3-5 times fair value on a 20-40% commission, sometimes for machine-made silk sold as handwoven.
Walk Kachori Gali for kachori-sabzi and tamatar chaat, roughly INR 30-60 each, then spend an hour or two in Bengali Tola, the atmospheric lane behind the ghats with its own dedicated character, distinct from the tourist-dense core. Close the day at Blue Lassi Shop on Dashashwamedh Road, trading since roughly the 1950s, a small classic cup roughly INR 120, fruit and dry-fruit versions climbing toward INR 500. Remember the temple core has been formally vegetarian and dry within 2km of Kashi Vishwanath since 2024, so do not expect meat or alcohol near the old city lanes.
For Ramnagar Fort and a slower fifth-day offbeat stretch, see our 4-day and 5-day itineraries; the full guide and the places page cover the same route in more depth. Keep the cremation-ghat rule non-negotiable on every day of this trip: no photos, no lingering, a respectful distance only.
