Varanasi 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Day 1: Arrival and the anchor evening
Land at VNS airport (roughly 25-26km out) or Varanasi Junction station; prebook a taxi ahead, roughly INR 600-850 sedan. Base at Assi Ghat. In the evening, walk to Dashashwamedh Ghat for the free Ganga Aarti, roughly 6:45pm summer, 5:45pm winter. If your route passes Manikarnika or Harishchandra, the working cremation ghats, no photographs of pyres, bodies or mourners, ever, and keep a respectful distance.
Day 2: Sarnath, the full day
Sarnath sits roughly 10km out, 30-45 minutes each way, or book the half-day tour above; see Incredible India’s Sarnath page or the Archaeological Survey of India’s Sarnath page for background. The Dhamek Stupa marks the Buddha’s first sermon; the archaeological site runs roughly 6am-6pm, foreigner entry about INR 100-300, and the Sarnath Museum , closed Fridays, holds the four-lion Ashoka capital, India’s national emblem.
Day 3: Silk, street food and Bengali Tola
Buy silk independently in Thatheri Bazaar or Vishwanath Gali, never through a driver’s tip, that detour runs 3-5 times fair value on a 20-40% commission. Walk Kachori Gali for kachori-sabzi and tamatar chaat, roughly INR 30-60 each, and close at Blue Lassi Shop, a small cup roughly INR 120.
Day 4: Ramnagar Fort and the heritage walk
The 18th-century red sandstone fort, built by Maharaja Balwant Singh, holds vintage cars, royal costumes, an armory and a 19th-century astronomical clock; see Incredible India’s Ramnagar Fort page . Cash only, foreigner entry roughly INR 50-150. Afternoon, book the guided heritage walk above through the ghats and old city.
Day 5: BHU, Bharat Kala Bhavan and the quiet ghats
Is a fifth day in Varanasi actually worth adding? Yes, if you want the offbeat version rather than a repeat of days one through four. Banaras Hindu University’s campus is a genuine change of pace from the density of the old city, and the Bharat Kala Bhavan museum on campus is a deeper art and archaeology collection than the smaller galleries elsewhere in town, nominal entry.
Spend the afternoon at Tulsi Ghat and Namo Ghat, both south of the main tourist crush and both free, a better sense of the ghats as lived space, laundry, yoga, morning prayer, than the Dashashwamedh crowd allows. If the food walk above did not fit earlier in the trip, this is the day to finally book it.
