Trondheim in 7 Days: A Slow Close

Seven days is the 6-day plan plus a slow, free final day rather than a rushed extra paid sight. Less time, the 2 through 6-day plans end after the Røros overnight. This is honestly the ceiling before a Trondheim trip starts padding itself out; the city and its two real day trips are covered well before day 7.
Book ahead
- A Nidaros Cathedral tower climb slot, if visiting in summer.
- A Røros guesthouse or hotel room for the overnight on day 4.
- Any hotel near 28 July-3 August 2026, if your dates overlap Olavsfestdagene.
Day 1: Nidaros Cathedral and Midtbyen
Nidaros Cathedral (entry roughly NOK 120-150, verify), tower climb (roughly NOK 70, verify) if open, then Stiftsgården’s guided tour (roughly NOK 100-150, verify). Dinner in Bakklandet, NOK 500-900 mid-range. Tip: the cathedral closes during services, check first.
Day 2: Bakklandet, the Trampe, and Munkholmen
Bakklandet’s streets and the Krana lookout in the morning, the free Trampe bicycle lift alongside. Munkholmen ferry from Ravnkloa in the afternoon (roughly NOK 95, verify, seasonal), Kristiansten Fortress at sunset. Tip: confirm the ferry’s running for your dates first.
Day 3: Stiklestad
About 90km, 1.5 hours, north: the 1030 battle site behind Nidaros’s whole story, its National Cultural Centre, the 1180 church, and a 30-building folk museum. Tip: do this after day 1’s cathedral visit for the connection to land.
Day 4: travel to Røros, overnight
The scenic Rørosbanen train or a roughly 2.5-hour drive southeast reaches Røros, the UNESCO-listed copper-mining town founded in 1644. Walk the old wooden streets in the afternoon and stay the night in town. Tip: pack an extra layer; Røros runs colder than Trondheim even in the same season.
Day 5: Røros in the morning, back to Trondheim
Tour the old Olavsgruva mine, have lunch in town, then catch an afternoon train or drive back. Evening is free for a relaxed dinner after two travel days. Tip: check the Rørosbanen timetable the night before; departures are limited.
Day 6: a museum, then Bymarka by tram
Rockheim, Ringve (combined ticket roughly NOK 230-245, verify), or Sverresborg in the morning, then the Gråkallbanen, the world’s northernmost tram, out to Lian at 297m elevation for a walk in the Bymarka forest. Tip: save this for whichever morning has the worst weather.
Day 7: Ladestien, and an easy end
The Ladestien coastal path runs about 8-9km along the fjord from Ladehammeren to Rotvollfjæra, roughly 2-2.5 hours, past old farms and historic churches, free and genuinely quiet compared to anywhere in Midtbyen. Combine it with a final morning at the Ravnkloa fish market for fresh shrimp before you go. With a spare afternoon before a flight or train, this is a calmer close than squeezing in one more ticketed sight. Tip: check the Værnesekspressen or airport train schedule the night before; the airport sits about 35km out.

One concrete move: don’t book a paid attraction for day 7. The free Ladestien walk plus a last visit to Ravnkloa covers the morning well, and it leaves the afternoon genuinely open for a delayed flight or a slow lunch instead of another admission fee.
