Trondheim in 6 Days: Røros Overnight

Six days is the 5-day plan with one change: Røros becomes an overnight instead of a rushed there-and-back, which is genuinely the better way to see it. Less time, the 4 and 5-day plans do Røros as a single long day. More time, the 7-day itinerary adds a slow, cheap final day on top of this.
Book ahead
- A Nidaros Cathedral tower climb slot, if visiting in summer.
- A Røros guesthouse or hotel room for the overnight on day 4.
- Any hotel near 28 July-3 August 2026, if your dates overlap Olavsfestdagene.
Day 1: Nidaros Cathedral and Midtbyen
Nidaros Cathedral (entry roughly NOK 120-150, verify), tower climb (roughly NOK 70, verify) if open, then Stiftsgården’s guided tour (roughly NOK 100-150, verify). Dinner in Bakklandet, NOK 500-900 mid-range. Tip: the cathedral closes during services, check the schedule first.
Day 2: Bakklandet, the Trampe, and Munkholmen
Bakklandet’s streets and the Krana lookout in the morning, the free Trampe bicycle lift alongside. Munkholmen ferry from Ravnkloa in the afternoon (roughly NOK 95, verify, seasonal May/June-August/September), Kristiansten Fortress at sunset. Tip: confirm the ferry’s running before you build the afternoon around it.
Day 3: Stiklestad
About 90km, 1.5 hours, north: the 1030 battle site behind Nidaros’s whole story, its National Cultural Centre, the 1180 church, and a 30-building folk museum. Tip: do this after day 1’s cathedral visit, so the connection lands.
Day 4: travel to Røros, overnight
Take the scenic Rørosbanen train or drive the roughly 2.5 hours southeast to Røros, the UNESCO-listed copper-mining town founded in 1644. Spend the afternoon walking the old town’s wooden streets before the day-trip crowds arrive the next morning, and book a room in town rather than heading back. Tip: Røros gets genuinely cold even outside deep winter; pack a layer you wouldn’t otherwise bring to Trondheim.
Day 5: Røros in the morning, back to Trondheim
Tour the old Olavsgruva mine and have a proper Røros lunch before catching an afternoon train or drive back to Trondheim. Evening is free for a relaxed dinner in Midtbyen or Bakklandet after two travel-heavy days. Tip: check the Rørosbanen timetable the night before; there are only a handful of return departures a day.
Day 6: a museum, then Bymarka by tram
Pick Rockheim, Ringve (combined ticket roughly NOK 230-245, verify), or Sverresborg for the morning. In the afternoon, ride the Gråkallbanen, the world’s northernmost tram, to Lian at 297m elevation, about 21 minutes, and walk one of Bymarka’s marked trails. Tip: save this day for whichever morning has the worst weather; the museum is the indoor fallback, the tram and forest walk are for when it clears.
