Trondheim in 4 Days: Plus Røros

Four days is the 3-day plan plus Røros, the UNESCO-listed copper-mining town Trondheim itself doesn’t have inside its own city limits. Less time, drop this day and stick to the 3-day version. More time, the 5-day itinerary slows the pace rather than adding a fourth site.
Book ahead
- A Nidaros Cathedral tower climb slot, if visiting in summer.
- Rørosbanen train tickets or a rental car for day 4.
- Any hotel near 28 July-3 August 2026, if your dates overlap Olavsfestdagene.
Day 1: Nidaros Cathedral and Midtbyen
Nidaros Cathedral (entry roughly NOK 120-150, verify) first, with the summer-only tower climb (roughly NOK 70, verify) if it’s open. Stiftsgården’s guided tour (roughly NOK 100-150, verify) follows. Dinner in Bakklandet runs NOK 500-900 mid-range. Tip: check the cathedral’s service schedule before planning your visit hour.
Day 2: Bakklandet, the Trampe, and Munkholmen
Bakklandet’s cobbled streets and the Krana lookout in the morning, the free Trampe bicycle lift alongside them. Afternoon ferry to Munkholmen from Ravnkloa (roughly NOK 95, verify, seasonal May/June-August/September), then Kristiansten Fortress at sunset. Tip: confirm the ferry’s running before committing the afternoon to it.
Day 3: Stiklestad
About 90km, 1.5 hours, north, Stiklestad marks where St. Olav died in battle in 1030, the event behind Nidaros Cathedral’s whole existence. The National Cultural Centre covers it with dioramas, a short film, the 1180 church, and a 30-building folk museum. Tip: do this after day 1’s cathedral visit, not before, so the backstory actually lands.
Day 4: Røros, the UNESCO town Trondheim doesn’t have
Røros, founded 1644, sits about 2.5 hours southeast by car or the scenic Rørosbanen train. It’s genuinely one of Europe’s best-preserved wooden towns, with guided tours through the old Olavsgruva mine and a strong local-food reputation. A single day covers the old town centre and a mine tour, but it’s comfortably an overnight if your schedule allows one, rather than a rushed there-and-back on the same day. Tip: check Rørosbanen’s timetable before you go; the last train back sets a hard limit on how long you can actually stay.

One concrete move: check the Rørosbanen return schedule before you leave Trondheim that morning. Missing the last train back turns a day trip into an unplanned overnight, which is fine if you packed for it and a problem if you didn’t.
