Djerba 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Seven days is the classic all-inclusive package length, and this plan treats it that way: four island culture days, an overnight Sahara excursion, and the beach as the daily spine throughout rather than an afterthought. Safety in brief: Tunisia is US Level 2, general terrorism risk, and the real do-not-travel zones sit far south on the Libya and Algeria borders, not on Djerba. The one relevant incident, a fatal shooting near El Ghriba Synagogue on 9 May 2023, was a single targeted event with no tourist-directed repeat since; the sites below carry routine, visible security.
Day 1: Arrival, Houmt Souk, and the beach
Settle in, then a first pass at Houmt Souk: the covered souks, the fondouks, and the working fish auction, plus Borj el-Kebir (Borj Ghazi Mustapha), the 15th-16th-century fort, around 8 TND. Afternoon at Sidi Mahrès (the main strip, ~13 km) or quieter Aghir/La Seguia.
Day 2: El Ghriba and Djerbahood
Morning in Erriadh (Hara Seghira) for El Ghriba Synagogue, traditionally the oldest synagogue in Africa, its current building 19th-century on a site tradition holds back roughly 2,500 years; dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered. Walk the Djerbahood murals in the same village, around 150 artists and 300+ pieces since 2014. Afternoon at leisure or another beach stop.
Day 3: Guellala and Djerba Explore Park
Morning in Guellala, roughly 450 working potters and the Guellala Museum (~10 TND). Afternoon at Djerba Explore Park in Midoun: the Lalla Hadria Museum of Islamic art, a heritage village, and a crocodile farm with around 400 Nile crocodiles (feeding 5pm), combined entry about 20 TND.
Day 4: Midoun’s market and a beach day
Midoun’s Friday market if the date lines up, otherwise a full beach day; November through March, consider the boat trip to Ras Rmel (Flamingo Island) for the flamingo colonies instead.
Day 5: Drive to Ksar Ghilane
Head out for the overnight Sahara excursion: Ksar Ghilane, a genuine oasis with dunes, camel rides, and a natural hot spring, day-trip-able in theory but far better as a 2-day camp. En route, this pairs naturally with the Matmata troglodyte cave-homes and Hotel Sidi Driss (the interior set of Luke Skywalker’s home). Day 6: Ksar Ghilane and back to Djerba
A morning in the dunes, the hot spring, and a last camel ride before the drive back to the island in the afternoon. If Star Wars sites matter more to you than the Sahara, an alternative for days five and six is an overnight to Tozeur, Nefta, and Chott el Djerid, the vast salt lake near the Mos Espa set, roughly 5 hours 40 minutes from Djerba one-way and genuinely too far for a single day.
Day 7: Beach and departure
A full beach day to close it out, whichever spot you haven’t tried yet, before transferring for departure.

One concrete tip: pack for both temperature extremes on days five and six, the desert runs far colder at night than the coast. And the rule underneath the whole trip: the Tunisian dinar is a closed currency, exchange only what you’ll spend and keep every receipt, since only around 30% is reconvertible on departure.
