Montevideo 5 Day Itinerary

Five days is honestly the point where Montevideo starts leaning on its day trips more than the city itself, and that’s fine: the city portion below stays the same 2 days as the shorter plans, with 3 full day trips added. Shorter, the 4-day plan drops Punta del Este. Longer, the 6 and 7-day plans add more of the city’s neighborhoods and culture.

Book these before you go

  • Colonia del Sacramento transport (Buquebus or Colonia Express), which sells out on weekends.
  • A Bodega Bouza tasting in Canelones, which needs booking ahead.
  • Punta del Este accommodation if you decide to stay overnight rather than day-trip it (strongly recommended in summer).

Day 1

Arrive via Carrasco International Airport, Uber or Cabify $15-25 into town. Spend the day in Ciudad Vieja: Plaza Matriz, the Cathedral, the Cabildo, Sarandí street, then Plaza Independencia for Palacio Salvo, tallest in South America when built in 1927. Lunch at Mercado del Puerto ($20-40 asado at El Palenque), Rambla at sunset.

Tip: pay with a foreign card everywhere; it’s an automatic VAT discount, not something you claim back later.

Day 2

Estadio Centenario and the Museo del Fútbol in the morning, site of the 1930 World Cup final. Lunch at Mercado Agrícola (MAM) or Tristán Narvaja if it’s Sunday. Afternoon at Pocitos beach, dinner at a parrilla away from the market, chivito at least once.

Tip: budget bus fare (~$1.25) or Uber between the stadium and the beach; there’s no metro shortcut.

Day 3

Full day trip to Colonia del Sacramento, 2 to 2.5 hours away, walkable in 6-8 hours. UNESCO old town, cobblestones, lighthouse; lunch on the waterfront there.

Tip: confirm your return departure before you start wandering; services back to Montevideo run less often than expected.

Day 4

Half day in Canelones wine country (~40 minutes out), Bodega Bouza for Tannat, Uruguay’s signature grape. Afternoon back in the city at Punta Carretas: the lighthouse and the former-prison shopping mall. Dinner in Ciudad Vieja or Pocitos.

Tip: book the Canelones winery ahead and arrange a car or transfer; it’s not a walk-in or bus-friendly area.

Day 5

Day trip to Punta del Este, 2 to 2.5 hours east: La Mano sand-hand sculpture and Casapueblo at Punta Ballena. In summer (December-March), this genuinely works better as an overnight than a rushed day trip; in shoulder season, a long day trip is fine.

Tip: if you’re day-tripping in summer, leave early; Punta del Este’s beach crowds and traffic both peak by mid-afternoon.
