Montevideo 4 Day Itinerary

Four days is Montevideo’s full city itinerary plus a wine-country half day. Shorter, the 3-day plan drops the wine country. Longer, the 5 through 7-day plans add Punta del Este.

Book these before you go

  • A Colonia del Sacramento day tour or ferry/bus schedule, since weekends sell out.
  • A Canelones winery visit (Bodega Bouza), which requires booking ahead rather than walking in.
  • Your hotel for all 4 nights, especially in summer or during Carnaval.

Day 1

Land at Carrasco International Airport; Uber or Cabify runs $15-25 into the city. Spend the day in Ciudad Vieja: Plaza Matriz, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Cabildo, Sarandí street, then Plaza Independencia for Palacio Salvo, the tallest building in South America when it opened in 1927, and the equestrian Artigas statue. Lunch at Mercado del Puerto ($20-40 for asado at El Palenque), then the Rambla at sunset to close the day.

Tip: pay with a foreign card here and everywhere; the restaurant VAT discount (22% down to 9%) is automatic at the terminal.

Day 2

Morning at Estadio Centenario and the Museo del Fútbol (site of the 1930 World Cup final, a few dollars entry). Lunch at Mercado Agrícola (MAM), or the Feria de Tristán Narvaja if it’s Sunday. Afternoon at Pocitos beach, dinner at a parrilla away from the market, ordering the chivito at least once.

Tip: budget Uber or bus fare (~$1.25) between the stadium and the beach; there’s no metro to shortcut it.

Day 3

Full day trip to Colonia del Sacramento, 2 to 2.5 hours away and walkable in 6-8 hours. The UNESCO old town, cobblestones, and lighthouse are worth committing the whole day to; lunch at a waterfront restaurant in Colonia rather than rushing back.

Tip: check your return departure time before you start wandering; buses and ferries back to Montevideo run less frequently than you’d expect for a popular day-trip town.

Day 4

Half day in Canelones wine country, about 40 minutes out. Bodega Bouza is the pioneer winery and the one worth booking ahead for a Tannat tasting, Uruguay’s signature grape, not Malbec. Back in the city by afternoon, walk Punta Carretas: the 1876 lighthouse and the shopping mall converted from the old city prison, a real piece of history rather than a sanitized mall anecdote. Farewell dinner back in Ciudad Vieja or Pocitos.

Tip: Canelones wineries are spread out; arrange a car or transfer rather than relying on city buses to reach Bodega Bouza.
