Johannesburg 6 Day Itinerary (No Traps)

Before you go: Johannesburg has real violent-crime risk, and it’s also a city most visitors get through cleanly with the right habits. Use Uber or Bolt, not walking, especially downtown or after dark. Take the Gautrain between OR Tambo, Sandton, and Pretoria. Keep car doors locked and stay alert at traffic lights. Do Soweto on a guided tour, not solo. Sandton is the lower-risk base for this plan. Check your own government’s current travel advisory before you go.
Six days lets you stretch the Pilanesberg safari to a proper overnight instead of a single long day, and fold the Magaliesberg into the drive back. Base in Sandton for the city portion, move by Gautrain and Uber.
Book these before you go:
- A guided Soweto tour , including Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Museum
- A Cradle of Humankind tour , or a rental car if you’d rather self-drive
- A Pilanesberg safari lodge or tour , for the overnight
- A Sandton hotel , for Gautrain access and the safest base
Day 1: Apartheid history and Maboneng
Apartheid Museum in Ormonde: your ticket randomly assigns a “White” or “Non-White” entrance at the turnstile; allow 2.5-3+ hours, admission roughly R85-120. Afternoon: Constitution Hill in Braamfontein. Evening: Uber to Maboneng for dinner, Uber straight back.
Day 2: Guided Soweto day
A half-day guided Soweto tour: Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial, covering the 16 June 1976 Soweto Uprising soberly. Take a shisa nyama lunch stop if offered. Evening in Sandton or Rosebank.
Day 3: The Cradle of Humankind
A full day, ~40-50km northwest. UNESCO World Heritage Site (1999) : the Sterkfontein Caves (Mrs Ples, Little Foot, Homo naledi) and the Maropeng Visitor Centre. Tours run hourly Tuesday-Sunday, roughly 9am-4pm (closed Monday); confirm Sterkfontein’s current reopening status.
Day 4: Pretoria’s Union Buildings
Gautrain from Sandton to Pretoria, about an hour. The Union Buildings and its Mandela statue, the Voortrekker Monument, and Freedom Park. October brings Pretoria’s jacaranda blooms. Return by Gautrain for a Sandton or Rosebank dinner.
Day 5: Pilanesberg, arrival and afternoon game drive
Drive or transfer roughly 2-3 hours northwest to Pilanesberg National Park, a genuine malaria-free Big Five safari inside an extinct volcanic crater. Check into a lodge and take an afternoon game drive, guided is the easier call for a first safari, though the park is one of the few you can self-drive in a standard car.
Day 6: Pilanesberg morning drive, then the Magaliesberg on the way back
An early morning game drive, when wildlife activity peaks, then the drive back toward Johannesburg. Break the trip at the Magaliesberg, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2015 (not a World Heritage Site), with the Hartbeespoort Dam cableway for a view over the range, before continuing back into Sandton or Rosebank for a final dinner.
The 6-day spine
| Day | Focus | Getting there |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, Maboneng | Uber |
| 2 | Guided Soweto tour | Guided vehicle |
| 3 | Cradle of Humankind | Tour or self-drive |
| 4 | Pretoria | Gautrain |
| 5-6 | Pilanesberg safari (overnight), Magaliesberg on return | Self-drive or tour |
Trim back to the 5-day itinerary if the overnight doesn’t fit, or extend to the 7-day itinerary to add a dedicated Sandton, Rosebank, and Melville food-and-markets day.
One concrete move: don’t try to drive straight through from Pilanesberg back to Sandton on day 6 without the Magaliesberg stop. It breaks up a long drive and turns a transit day into one more thing you actually did.
