Johannesburg 4 Day Itinerary (No Traps)

Before you go: Johannesburg has real violent-crime risk, and it’s also a city most visitors get through cleanly with the right habits. Use Uber or Bolt, not walking, especially downtown or after dark. Take the Gautrain between OR Tambo, Sandton, and Pretoria. Keep car doors locked and stay alert at traffic lights. Do Soweto on a guided tour, not solo. Sandton is the lower-risk base for this plan. Check your own government’s current travel advisory before you go.
Four days adds Pretoria, reachable directly by Gautrain, to the core spine of apartheid history, a guided Soweto day, and the Cradle of Humankind. Base in Sandton throughout, and move by Gautrain and Uber.
Book these before you go:
- A guided Soweto tour , including Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Museum
- A Cradle of Humankind tour , or a rental car if you’d rather self-drive
- A Sandton hotel , for Gautrain access and the safest base
- A reputable airport transfer or the Gautrain from OR Tambo on arrival
Day 1: Apartheid history and Maboneng
Start at the Apartheid Museum in Ormonde. Your ticket randomly assigns you a “White” or “Non-White” entrance at the turnstile; allow 2.5-3+ hours, admission roughly R85-120. In the afternoon, Constitution Hill in Braamfontein, the Old Fort prison complex where Gandhi, Mandela, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, and Sisulu were all held, now beside the Constitutional Court. Evening: Uber to Maboneng for dinner, and Uber straight back rather than walking after dark.
Day 2: Guided Soweto day
Book a half-day guided Soweto tour: Vilakazi Street, the only street to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize laureates, and the Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial, covering the 16 June 1976 Soweto Uprising soberly. Take a shisa nyama lunch stop if the tour includes one. Evening back in Sandton or Rosebank.
Day 3: The Cradle of Humankind
A full day, roughly 40-50km northwest of the city. This UNESCO World Heritage Site (1999) covers the Sterkfontein Caves, one of the richest hominin fossil sites anywhere (Mrs Ples, Little Foot, Homo naledi), and the Maropeng Visitor Centre. Tours run hourly Tuesday-Sunday, roughly 9am-4pm (closed Monday); confirm Sterkfontein’s current reopening status. Do both sites, not one.
Day 4: Pretoria’s Union Buildings
Take the Gautrain from Sandton to Pretoria, roughly an hour, no car needed. See the Union Buildings and its Mandela statue, the Voortrekker Monument, and Freedom Park. If you’re visiting around October, Pretoria’s jacaranda blooms have earned it the nickname “the Jacaranda City.” Return to Johannesburg by Gautrain in the evening for a final Sandton or Rosebank dinner.

One concrete move: do Pretoria on the Gautrain, not a rental car. It’s the one day trip in this plan you genuinely don’t need a vehicle for, and it removes an entire safety variable from the day.
